....What brand of filter, that is... any "off-brand" filters giving these problems?
I have stuck with AC Delco and never had any problems....but I'm the only grease monkey that has ever changed filters.

Stick with better filters. K&N has a hex on the end, STP, Mobil 1, Wix, Bosch, NAPA Gold, and others have a heavier can and better media. Stay away from the AC Delco E type. Use the best filters and oils if you plan on keeping the car. I avoid AC Delco standard filters except in a pinch. The filter media sometimes fails before synthetic oil change intervals.

Yup... The only time i need tools is to remove a factory installed filter... They are always too tight.

Happened to me a couple of years ago... After deforming the filter housing, I got pretty mad and called the dealer up to come and fix their mistake. They came and got the car and even put the new filter on and put my oil in for me. This is in a pretty small town however...

Boldface is the root cause- the GM techs crank it so there's no leaks

Yup, just used it the other day for the factory hulk installed filter on my durango. The jaws on the tool started tearing the filter apart by the time it started to loosen.

Yup. Snug it up, then 1/4 turn more - by hand only.

This will be the best solution of all. no slip, no scraped knuckles, 1/2" drive, and the ability use any length of extension you need. I had very similar issue recently when my neighbor brought one of the over. Piece of cake.
