ZL1 cam + no stall/converter?
So I was pretty much dead set on a SS1 GPI cam so I would pickup about 50-60 whp with my current Mod setup. I was interested in SS3 GPI cam. But I was told I HAD to have a 3600+ converter installed. I have since made a few LSA friends. One of which is running a stock converter + LT1Z 2.5 cam from Matt Gower.
So my question is, do I really have to have a converter? Any risk of breaking something or issues with running without one. Or just a sales tactic to sale more Circle D converters? All advice / opinions appreciated.

I wonder why GPI states on their site specifically their stage 2 and 3 require a stall. From what I've been told from friends is it's just a sales tactic. I don't mind spending the $$ if needed, but if it can be tuned out. I don't want to spend $1200 + for a Circle D TC.

GPI defines their cams based on the type of performance you’re wanting.
I’ve done a ton with GPI, I’d trust what they recommend.. they know their cams better that anyone... -Don

How much soda is in a small med large ?
7-11; 20oz 30oz, 40oz in a super big gulp. Same thing with a "stage 1". There is no such thing defined, just a marketing name for their performance starter cam. In the past you'd see more names like RV cam Tow truck or off road cam 3/4 race cam, full race cam. More specificly IIRC their 1 2 3 cams were spec'd like most would have a 2 3 4. So their stage 1 was like a 2 or 2.5 from other companies. That doesn't make it better or worse. You need to know or your builder to know what you're looking for in gains and tradeoffs in valve spring life and driveability. Edit: I just found out a McD small med large specs out to the same oz and only the cup is a different size. Magic. https://www.tiktok.com/@mykah.mykah/...0?referer_url= Last edited by silversleeper; 11-12-2020 at 10:26 PM. |
