High oil pressure?
I have a L99 engine with stock oil pump and a custom VVT cam and did a DOD delete. It also has a Holley oil pan without the DOD pressure relief valve.
Engine is on a stand and not in a car at the moment. Oil is the recommended 5W30 Mobil one. At idle 500-550 rpm, oil pressure is 43-46 psi with 180 ish oil temps. At 2500ish rpm, its at around 68psi. At 4000 rpm around 82psi Is this too high for this engine. |

L99 without DOD the high volume pump should be changed. I would opt for a replacement melling oil pump for the LS3.

Actually i would leave it in, more oil flow is always better, just need the right valley plate after a dod delete

I did a full DOD delete. Which means I changed everything that had to do with the system. So oil pan is gone which also means that oil pan AFM relief valve that was part of the AFM system is gone. Cam changed to a custom on off stock cam grind. VVT Cam bolt was replaced with brand new piece. All lifters changed. Valley plate changed. Full kit from GPI. Wiring harness brand new without DOD wiring. ECU was tuned to shut it off.
I left stock pump in (Part# 12571896) on the advice of GPI to leave it in. Last edited by Tran2la; 07-22-2018 at 11:27 AM. |

All you have to do is change the spring in the oil pump to a low pressure spring.

The stock l99 pump is fine for building with varied cams being higher volume already, stock oil pressure sending units have been known to fail...… But that's not necessarily too high the tempo matters; when hot running about 210 on a ls3 with a higher volume pump I run about 40 hot idling and of course more higher, but I idle at 950. Your low idle...that's a automatic thing you may want to increase..... a 400 rpm difference between a manual and auto with a better cam is a lot, though a low idle will accentuate the sound of the exhaust.....its not really that great and not so hot for the alternator either.... BTW you want high volume not high pressure pumps with LS engines. I find when hot higher pressures are much lowered so you would have to see.....and my gauge does not go up to 80 for PSI......but I would worry if its too low. Your having modified the engine with a new valley pan may have needed a tweak there for the pressure gauge etc...... and you may want to talk to a expert...………. but you should have about the same pressure before and after the cam install firmly IMO...…… Many use the ls3 pump I did on my first engine it was no problem oiling fine I figure anything above 30 hot idling is gravy and never want to go below it with my old chevys…..
