I feel like my car is eating so much gas lately. I usually average 16-17, but just watching the gas gauge has me cringing. Today, I drove 45 miles and went down almost a quarter of a tank. It was mostly highway. That's horrible.

Maybe you need to change brands of gas...

I've mostly been using Shell because that's the only top tier fuel (recommended by GM as per the owner's manual) around me. But sometimes I have to get gas at Citgo. Do you really think the brand of gas would make that much difference or are you talking octane?

Use the DIC, or even better, keep a log of fuel purchased and miles driven then do the math to get tank averages.

I have had my DIC running for 5K now. Took a trip to Springfield, Branson, and back during this run of milage and my total mpgs is sitting at 23.5. This includes city driving, highway up to 75mph, up and down the mountains on state highways doing 55 to 65, and driving back and forth to work for a month. I did goof off a few times in there also.
I reset the DIC before starting out heading North. Was running 27 until i started driving around in the city where the number went down to 21. The highway trip back home and the slower highway speeds to and from work has increased it back up. |

I use my DIC also. I know I do a lot of around town driving, but my low mileage is in the minority of everyone else here. Thankfully, I don't drive far when I do go out, so a whole tank can last me 2-4 weeks, depending on where I go (I've had the car almost 9 months and just reached 3,600 miles).

Brands can make a difference, I doubt that much, but they can, I just hope the station you use is actually pumping "Top Tier" Gasoline... I know formulas change from different areas of the country, that could have something to do with it too.. Are you in a area that they use oxygenated gasoline? that will really bring down MPG's. I know when I would travel from my area to Louisville KY, I would get around 32MPG in my HHR.. but filling up there with oxygenated gas on the trip back I would only average around 30MPG... So i stopped filling up there and filled up in Lexington and my mileage stayed at 32 for the entire trip..

How would I know if they were using oxygenated gas?

many areas that have pollution testing have to use it so the air quality does not exceed federal standards. I guess the only way to know is ask the service station manager if it is used in your area.
Oh I forgot, Oxygenated gasoline is mainly a Wintertime additive, so right now it may not be in your fuel.. But that being said, I was really thinking they could be using Reformulated gas in the summer to reduce emmissions... this gas also reduces fuel mileage... The EPA says 1 to 3% reduction, but in real life I have found it is more like 8-10% http://www.epa.gov/otaq/rfgecon.htm
