1936 Chevrolet Assembly line Video
Thought this was pretty cool. Not to much different from the modern Oshawa Camaro assembly line considering it was over 60 years ago.

Amazing how advanced the process was for the time. God knows if you didn't pay attention you could easily get killed. Pretty cool.

I like that video. Makes me imagine what my grandfather did when he worked on the Dodge assembly line in the 20's before the depression.

Seriously. They are basically standing inside the machine. Put those bolts in too slow and your hand becomes a permanent part of the frame.

That was neat! I wonder what the workers were paid per day or week and what the average pay was at the time? I wonder what plant that was and if its still producing cars? I wonder how many guys lost fingers/hands/arms in the big presses? And to comment on Obzen's comment......the workers were inside of the machines as they were moving towards the frame and back.......I guess paying attention wasn't about making a quality product, it was about going home alive!!!!

As an engineer, I find the mechanical beauty of those old systems fascinating. Things seem to be done in more or less the same sequence now as back then, but the safety and precision are drastically better, largely due to modern automation. One of the things that I noticed was how about half the workers may as well have been robots. Grab, turn, place, wait. Grab, turn, place, wait. Grab, turn, place, wait. Its enough to drive a person insane.
As for the automation back then ... doing things that way is almost becoming a lost art. A lot of those systems were based around mechanical signalling. As a piece of machinery (lets say its a ram) reaches the end of its stroke, it triggers a (usually pneumatic or hydraulic) signal which initiates the next element, that triggers a third, and so on. The mechanical signalling systems were eventually replaced with simple analog electrical ones, where in turn were replaced with complex digital electronics.

Yea....safety was marginal if you were not paying attention for a split second.
I did notice though that the body panel press required the operator to use BOTH hands to activate it.
