LS3 Camaro vs LS2 GTO

Alright well I've been a lurker on the forum for awhile know quite a bit about the new camaro like most of you....anyways my question today is how much faster and how much more power does the almighty "Camero" have over the 05-06 GTO. Comparing the manual in both cars. As far as the look of the car well we all know that the Camaro takes the cake by 1000x. As far as speed lets do some chatting....

Lets get these numbers straight:

-Weight of both cars
-Stock wheel horsepower and torque on a dynojet dyno

From what I've seen the Camaro LS3s are between 355-375whp, and the GTO LS2s are about 340-350whp. Let me know if those numbers are right or not.

The GTOs are definetly lighter, but I'm sure not by much...discuss that as well. As far as the transmissions go, the TR-6060 is way better as well.

But if the GTOs are a bit lighter and put down a bit less whp, then the new camaro really isn't that much better stock vs stock.....

DISCUSS

The GTO does have better overall gearing too, don't forget that. At the track, they seem about equal from what has been posted.

I think the best way to do a comparison is a drag race. Bench racing won't be enough. We need to see a direct video of the comparison with a scanned slip and a camera at both ends of the track. Until we have this sort of comparison, the only things we can compare are the appearance and efficiency numbers, both of which favor the Camaro.

As far as potential is concerned, both have the capacity to be swapped with other LS-series engines, lending the possibility that both could hit very similar performance goals. If you want to leave the same block under the hood for the comparison, then we will need the cars to run against one another at the track.

You have the HP right on the money. As for weight the GTO weighs about 200 pounds less. When mine was bone stock, i ran a 13.16. Not sure what the Camaro runs.

From the 1/4 mile numbers that I have seen they seem to be pretty close, if not in favor of the GTO but only by 2-4 tenths. Also depends on the driver and transmission.

In the 13 second bracket with my '06 at an all GTO drag day I placed 1st of of 10 mostly due in part to the auto transmission. Punch it and go. And yeah, it was the first time I had ever done something like that prior.

As far as numbers go I ran consistently between 13.1-13.3 (60 degree weather) with a mild tune, CAI, x-pipe(resonator delete) and flowmasters with my best time being 13.02 and worst being a 13.7 (wheel hop)

And a year earlier with the same mods I ran between an average of 13.3-13.4 in 95+ degree weather with probably 105+ degree track temp.

HP #'s my A4 dynoed around 325-330 stock, 345 with the tune and CAI. I can't remember b/c I lost the dyno sheet. The M6 GTO's usually dyno about 15rwhp higher.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention stock tires too. Still had the stock tires on it when I sold it with 20,000 on the odo. 16,000 on the odo with I ran the 13.02

I believe it would be a drivers race but the only problem I have never seen one at the drag strip. Plenty of mustangs, a rare challenger or charger but always a couple of gto's.
I am sure its a warranty concern. Perhaps this fall?

I raced a buddy in an 05 goat from a roll and pulled on him just slightly. Although his car has full exhaust, intake, ported TB and a couple pedders parts. Surprised the hell out of me.

It should be a drivers race (very close). I would give the Camaro SS a slight advantage in trap speed/top end. This winter we will see what the Camaro SS can really run.
The LS2 GTO's have had several winters to produce fast track times.

From what I've seen, LS2 M6 GTO's usually dyno in the 330-340 rwhp range. The guys that dyno the lower numbers usually don't report it. You usually read about the higher dyno runs. Its actually pretty rare to see a bone stock LS2 GTO dyno 350 rwhp.

I filled in the ones I KNOW, but I have all that data at home on my computer.

Also, don't forget to get rear end gear size(s) and tire heights.

because of the weight, driver's race. the biggest problem with the GTO imo are the brakes

also i know that this is mostly a performance question, but besides brakes, although the interior is nice, the seats don't fold down in the GTO. i'm not sure if they do in the Camaro.

I was talking with a buddy about this the other day, telling him how surprised I was that the GTO vs Camaro angle isn't a slam dunk for the Chevy. Problems for the Chevy?

1: The GTO has much better seats, a higher quality interior, and noticeably more rear seat room.

2: If you intend to mod either the GTO is lighter by a meaningful amount.

3: Acceleration really is pretty similar. Even if the Camaro picks up a couple of tenths over the next couple of months you'll still have cars which are within two or three tenths of another all the way through the 1/4 mile.

Chevy advantages:

1: More distinctive look to say the least

2: Seems to handle a bit better

3: GTO's trunk is an even bigger joke than the Camaros.

That just about covers it. Camaro seems more and more like GTO part duex with retro styling, a cheaper interior, and a broader range of engine and model options.
