Chevy Challenges Ford To Muscle Car Fight, Ford Takes Bat, Goes Home
After Ford brought out its potentially ZL1-killing 650-horsepower 2013 Shelby GT500, Joel Ewanick, global vice president of GM marketing, decided to drop the gauntlet down at the feet of Ford. "We should take a Camaro, Ford brings a Mustang, we each pick our drivers, and see who has the best time on the Nürburgring," Ewanick said to Scott Burgess of the Detroit News. Jim Farley, who heads Ford's global marketing, wasn't taking the bait despite professed claims to a desire to "take a bat" to Chevrolet. "I wish we could," he said, after hearing about Ewanick's challenge. "Who wouldn't want to do that?" Huh. Sounds to us like maybe Ford's chicken. Hey, Farley — bawk-bawk-bawk-BA-kawk!
haha they must be scared!

650hp and 200mph equals fast straight line car... or...= a great muscle car!
These cars arent known for super handling.... granted the new camaro suspension is changing that.. but still the stangs numbers are impressive

That doesn't mean it's completely dialed in to what will be the stock "specs" which is necessary for any comparative track runs. They very well could be still testing different fuel trims, timing tables, different dampner settings and spring rates, etc. The parts are all there, but how they are tuned on stock cars may not be completely figured yet.

Id still take the Camaro any day even if it isnt top dog in HP. There's always a LSX454 with some huge turbo's if you want more power. Mercedes had a 700hp car that wasnt all that useful other than making passing someone on the highway a little more fun and quick.

The ZL1 will slam that GT500 most any day of the week.

It's to the point now where it is way more than horsepower to make it go.

How true. It's just like sprint car racing and top fuel. Both are only limited to the tires they have under them. The power keeps going up but they don't get a whole lot faster because the traction problem is still there.

yes and you speculated that the red GT500 was not a production car. Turns out that it is a production 2013 GT500 with a roll cage - the same conditions as the ZL1 that did 7:41

So what is the consensus on the updated rear? I hear a lot of "Finally they fixed the ugly rear end" but in reality all they did was remove the 2012 tail light's and replace them with this new design, paint the rear diffuser and add quad tips. Is that all it took for you members to jump on the 2013 GT500 looks good bandwagon?

I'm VERY interested to see if Ford can actually put 650 hp to the ground in a package that anyone can drive

That's great that it can do 200 mph, but can the car handle? No car can drive twisties at 200 mph.
EXACTLY!! I'm sorry but the ZL1 is King for a reason. 580hp is plenty of power to destroy the gt500 and it will due to all the work/blood/sweat GM put into it. What the hell is 600+hp if you cant manage to keep it to the surface?! This is just pure flat out bragging rights for Ford and i'm very surprised to here so many so called "Chevy Fans'' run to Ford side and bash the ZL1. Remember Ford has no Golden Egg therefore they can give the gt500 as much Hp as they want, but GM has the Z06 & Zr1!! When the smoke clears, ZL1 will be on top and i cant wait to see the numbers on that gt500! Ford didnt even want to run against the ZL1
If i were a ZL1 buyer i would wait for the 2013 and for all the mark up bs to clear. Other then that the ZL1 is priced very fair because its a Muscle Car with Super Car Abilities!
Don't get me wrong, Ford has done a great job and the new rear on the gt500 is very sexy but i have Chevy blood in my veins.
This Is a Great Time For American Muscle in General

Love all my TRUE Chevy Brother & Sisters

That is one hell of an assumption, based on what tests, times, or actual data?

Correct! The gt500 imho will be a awesome Drag or straight line Muscle Car, when GM is changing the entire game with this all around High Performance Muscle Machine (ZL1) that has a bunch of $80,000+ cars shitting in their pants.

I originally speculated that Red wasn't a production vehicle, Road and Track confirmed that on the 14th of November. It was a suspension, handling, top speed and heat soak mule. The ZL1 was confirmed to be a chassis tuning mule during their 7:41 run... Both were fully caged....

"I wish we could" sounds like the car isn't ready yet to me.
