Curb Rash; Wheel Cracked... Drivable? *Pics*
Got some curb rash guys. Cracked the wheel VERY SLIGHTLY.
Should I be worried? Is it driveable? I mean it is a forged wheel so I'm sure it's pretty strong. I ordered a wheel from Forgestar (the maker of my wheels) and they said it'll take 6-8 weeks. I have no other option but to drive the car. I don't really have the money to buy another set of wheels, even if they're temporary... Any solutions? By the way, IF ANYONE HAS A 20 x 9 FORGESTAR F14 WHEEL EITHER AS A SPARE OR JUST LAYING AROUND, LET ME KNOW. I AM INTERESTED! ANY FINISH IS OK, I CAN GET IT POWDERCOATED FROM A BUDDY. THANKS!

Thats not a rash... more like a full blown infection. I would not drive on that.

What can I do? I need to survive on 6-8 weeks.
I am not doing any highway/freeway driving by the way. Just on city streets.

Assume it's holding air?? You have a spare in the trunk? If so make sure it's good & full of air also just in case.

Like said before make sure to check pressure regularly and make sure crack is not getting worse. You know how many people are driving with cracked aluminum wheels, they can crack with low profile tires by just driving over railroad tracks with low air pressure. The wheel is not going to blow apart worse case it will start to lose air.

If you ask me, it looks like the paint is cracked, not the wheel.
The metal seems to have bent and stretched a little, causing the paint to crack. If the tire is holding pressure and you dont get really nasty vibrations when moving, I think you are fine for a little while. I wouldnt go over 60 with it, or drive in the rain. BE careful, blowout on the front means youll have a hard time steering. But any competent driver can deal with a front tire running out of air under 60 mph on a dry day. You can use soapy water around the area to see if you have a leak, bubbles will form if there is air leaking anywhere. |

If the wheel is cracked as opposed to the coating cracked, stop driving on it. Think of it this way. Now you need a new wheel or a wheel repair and that is going to cost you more than you want to spend. If the wheel fails you have no idea what the repair will be in addition to the wheel.

I'd take the wheel to a wheel repair specialist to see what he recommends. I can't give you my best judgment just by looking at a picture, but if this was my personal car, just out of safety for YOU and the people driving around you, I would put the stock wheels back on if you still have them.

The problem is, I don't have any spare wheels. I might just order a tire tonight and get a tire put on and hold off on the rim for 6-8 weeks.
I've been driving for two days on it (yesterday and today) and no leakage... I've been monitoring the tire pressure and seeing if the crack is getting worse and everything is ok so far. I'm more worried about the RIM than the tire guys... I don't want the rim to break on me or something but something is telling me that's unlikely...

I would get it repaired. I had a rim that was much more damaged on my Chrysler LHS and got it repaired. In my case the damage was so bad it caused a flat. I was able to get my rim repaired for $30.00. Try these guys maybe they can help.
