Stock '89 IROC-Z 5.7L RWHP
My best friend has an '89 IROC-Z that has been in shambles for the last 10 years.
I was driving him around in my 2010 Camaro SS the other day and he was saying how he didn't like the current gen cars. Then he started talking about how his car was a beast and had all kinds of power. I remember riding in it a LOOONG time ago, so I decided tonight to check the stats for his car... I had a hard time finding a direct answer, but I came upon this: "240HP / 345Torque" Is this accurate? |

And that would be pushing it IIRC.

I have an IROC and I can guarantee there is not gobs of power! A V6 5th gen would walk me hands down. He seems to be a dreamer.

The IROC has more torque providing a better 60' time and even 1/8 mile time. However, the newer V6's have more HP and can come thru at the top end. I took the following information from dragtimes.com Comparing some of the 89 IROC's to my V6.

Stock 5.7 350 TPI cars run 14.3's at theres BEST, STOCK. TPI is terrible for going fast. If he converted that L98 350 to Carb or to a Holley Stealth ram setup and an aftermarket cam, then he would definitely give you a run for your money. I had an 11 second 3rd gen Camaro. It weighed ~3100lbs and made ~480rwhp, 6-speed Manual. When it had 347rwhp and weighed 3,250lbs, I ran 13.2 @ 111 MPH with no traction. That's stock 5th gen SS territory. Stock TPI cars are not fast. They're burnout machines though!

Funny, mine was 220HP and I thought it was fast back then. Nothing like today's models.

Agreed
Torque monsters are about it when it comes to the 5.7 TPI's. I have a 91 Z 5.7 and it is the biggest turd as far as power goes. Nothing special at all as far as power goes Stock 90-92 5.7's are rated 245 h.p. 345 lbs of torque. RWHP can't be much at all

Another thing to consider is the TPI runs out of breathe at 4500 rpm.
Although on the autoX course the IROC will walk all over the 5th gen unless the 5th gen is 1LE or ZL1.

My '91 Z28 with the 350 had a lot of bolt-ons done to it. It's best time at our local 1/8th mile was a 9.03, it did have a little more in it (I had to baby it out of the hole), so possibly 8.85 or so. That translates to roughly 13.7-13.8 in the 1/4. That's with headers, a cat-back, a CAI, airfoil, chip.

in 1989 an IROC with 245HP/345 TQ was pretty impressive. If it had the g92 with good gearing, they were pretty stout for that era.
would love to find a clean one, but they have become almost non existant! seems like the only ones out there are beaters, highly modified drag cars, or a few garage queens with 3,000 original miles and a $30k price tag!
