break in period for mufflers

is that a myth and if not how long do they take to break in? and what is actually happening with them

The systems we have installed have had a "break in" of sorts.

not really what ppl think it is.

But more of it needs to be used to burn off the inside and the oils that are inside of them.

takes a few days at most.

Youll smell something metallic burning thats normal.

thanks for the info. so people that think there breaking in they're muffler 1000 miles later are just imagining it.I read some posts about that and didn't know what they meant by it.

The break in depends on the mufflers themselves. It is very much real, though more so for some than others. Typically associates with the exhaust getting louder.

just make sure the muffler bearing it's self doesn't get too hot and you'll be ok..

jc whitney makes a gauge that bolts to the top of the dash to tell you the temp.

the sound of your new exhaust will change as the pipe "seasons"... basically it's a build up of carbon on the piping.. the carbon helps mellow out the sound a bit and can make your exhaust tone a bit deeper..
