It was said in 2006 that the Concept Camaro would get about 30 mpg highway. However, that was an estimate (probably optimistic too), and that was before the new calculation methods. So I would imagine that the base V8 will get 26, possibly 27 highway, maybe 17-18 city. Add about 2 mpg for the V6.

How will that happen? it gets 28/19 in the Solstice which is significantly lighter than the Camaro.

I don't think most of us committed folk will care TOO much about mpg numbers, yet with high gas prices a camaro with pretty decent city/highway mileage will make a big impact. Someone mentioned the Caddy has 22/27, I think those numbers could work for the 5th gen, could do even a little better who knows.

Don't worry. People often assume that fuel economy is directly linked to # of cylinders. You would think that a Camaro with a 4 banger should get something like 32/23 or there abouts. But 260 hp is 260 hp. 3800 lbs is 3800 lbs. Some things can be done to make things a bit more favourable, but miracles can't happen. For examply:its very interesting to note that the Evo X and WRX STi will be making around 300 hp, will weigh ~400 lbs less than the Camaro. You would assume that they get about 30/22 for mileage. Try 22-23/17. That is worst than any of our Camaro estimates. Transmission, torque band, and drive type all play to the Camaro's favour, negating the power and weight advantage that the imports have. However, these are perhaps the two most extreme examples you will ever find. I think its just funny seeing a compact (I think they still are classified as such . . . meh) getting a gas guzzler tax.
Which brings me to another point. I think that GM will try very hard to get the Camaro to have 27/17 for mileage. That lets it avoid the Gas Guzzler tax. if it were 26/18 it would add $1000 in GG tax.

The DI VVT engine used in the Cadillac CTS gets 17/26. I've looked into the mpg for the CTS because I'm interested in purchasing it if I decide not to get the Camaro for any reason. All of the reviews I have found with mpg tests, state an average mpg of approximately 19-20 mpg. This one at CNET, show an average mpg of just over 19 (19.2 to be exact).
As for the V8, if they go with the LS3 I think it will be in the same ballpark. I have a co-worker with an LS3-powered Corvette and he swears that he averages 23-24mpg. I'm quite sure the Corvette is more aerodynamic than the Camaro, but even losing a couple mpg would suit me just fine. With gas prices being what they are, my Chevelle doesn't see daylight much these days.

w/ gas prices at $4.00 for regular and $4.30 for high octane per gallon, I am wondering how much this is going to hurt sales of the new Camaro?
I am seriously looking to buy a new car in the coming months. I've been holding out on my purchase for the arrival of the new camaro, but am not thinking a Mini Cooper S may be a much better option at 35mpg. I've got a Jeep + Porsche that both get around 17-20 mpg and it's killing me. Not sure I want another guzzler. What are other peoples thoughts on this?? |

With gas prices so high, the 300hp 28mpg v6 Camaro will sell a lot more than represented on this forum, IMO.
