So I opened the trunk.

Holy crap! The battery actually DID explode. Acid all over the place.

I hope it was just a random thing, and the new one I'll buy doesn't do the same as soon as I hook it up.

What would make a cell (just one, I think) burst like that?

Battery exploding is usually caused by the alternator over charging the battery. I blew up 2 batteries in 1 car until I realized the alternator was messed up. Was 18 at the time was still learning a lot about cars.

What occurred is a weld broke between two cells. It was above the acid level and a spark ignited the hydrogen gas when the weld broke.
I worked in a battery factory, Globe Union, until it was bought out by Johnson Control Incorporated and moved to Mexico.
When you tried to start the engine, a load was placed on the battery and the weld let loose. The circuit opened and no power was supplied to the vehicle.

hydrogen is explosive,it only takes a spark.years ago i was starting a kenworth big rig when one exploded, blew off the battery cover.it started fine on the other 3 when i cranked it again, and i had 13 stops throughout central florida to make,so i drove it all day, just never shut it off.
