Winterizing

Gonna put it away this weekend for the winter. Goin on wheel dollies and covered up in the shop. Anything else special? I got a battery tender to keep plugged in. Used to fog the race motors back in the day to keep the bores from rusting. This new stuff need anything like that?

This has been my “pre-storage” checklist I’ve followed since I got my car back in 2018.

- [ ] Fresh Oil change before storage
- [ ] Top up fuel
- [ ] add appropriate amount of Fuel stabilizer (Stabil)
- [ ] Empty catch can *if have one installed*
- [ ] Detail car Inside and out
- [ ] Place foam garage mats under tires (non heated garage)
- [ ] inflate to 40 PSI to prevent flat spots.
- [ ] Install trickle charger to battery terminals under hood
- [ ] Indoor car cover on car
- [ ] Place mothballs around the car/by garage

I detail the car, take the battery out and put it on a tender in the basement. My storage unit doesn't have power or I'd just leave the tender on the battery in the car. Add Stabil, air up the tires to 40psi, back up the car onto 3/4" plywood blocks to get the tires off the concrete. Say good night and give it a big hug. Last part is the most important.

I won't be putting mine away until I know they are going to salt the roads. This is the huge reason I run all season tires. I know the guys with summer only tires need to do this when temps drop off. If I had summer only tires, I'd be putting it away this weekend. Thursday on here is highs in the low 30s. I can keep driving mine, no salt yet.

Consider adding a portable dehumidifier in the garage to keep the moisture content down.

I also monitor temp/humidity with one of these bluetooth sensors. Pretty nice to be able to see trends over days/months/year.

I second the dehumidifier suggestion above, it made a big difference in my garage, making mold and rust prevention all the more simple.

Maybe put some mothballs in a pan under the car too to keep the mice from getting in the car.

I saw someone make a post about this on the Harley forum I'm on. I've never had any issue with humidity during the winters in WI. The air is so dry in the house I have to run a humidifer/April Air. I used to get a bit of condesation on the concrete in the spring, but ever since I got my garage floor epoxied I don't have that issue anymore either. My garage is detached but insulated. However the storeage unit I keep my Camaro in is not insulated. No issue with condensation/humidity in that either though.

That's very good, I bet you don't have to worry much about proper airflow and mold/mildew/fungus prevention. We have significant humidity down here almost all year long, I run 3 dehumidifers in the house and they kick on often to keep it down to about 50%. If I turn off the one in the garage, humidity tends to climb to 85-90% pretty quickly.

Then again, winter is mild, salt on the roads very minimal, the grass is green almost all year long, the forests all around us are beautiful and we can grow plants almost all year long, except a few cold weeks in late Jan, early Feb. No place is perfect, it's always a tradeoff

Ya, I figured it had to just be the area. Even in the summer here, one dehumidifer in my basement to keep it at 50 and it runs maybe 50% of the time. Never had a dehumidifer in the garage. But... Ya, that white $hit will be flying soon, and temps as of Thursday here are low 30s for a high. Time to say good night to the toys until April.
