What could I do to the Axel for it to safely and reliably handle that power?

Like I said earlier there are aftermarket direct fit options out there.

Dana 60 which is the heaviest

GM 12 Bolt (they put these behind big blocks in the 60's and 70's)

Ford 9" this is based on the Ford 9" with a removable center section

Hawks Performance even offers a Mustang 8.8 rear end modified for 3rd and 4th gens

Check out Summit or Jegs for these.
