The 1970 model year was pretty uniformly fantastic as far as muscle cars go.

I have a soft spot for the 1970 Torino GT.

Since I owned one for 3-1/2 years in the early to mid seventies I'll have to say the Boss 429. The Boss 429 had one of the nicest looking motors also. I learned a lot about mechanics and cars as a teenager as this was my first car. The Boss was unreliable. The modified '69 Z/28 I had later was my favorite though. In 1973-74 during the gas embargo the muscle cars were less than half of what they were new. When people I went to high school or I hung around ask me if I wish I kept it, I say, "for the money".

Engine with single quad and stock manifold. I took all the Ford blue off the heads and intake manifold. The large valve covers were magnesium. The heads used o-rings instead of head gaskets and were a pita.

Did you know that the prototype '70 GSX is still around? It was a fully street-legal car from the day it was built even though it was a new-car circuit show car. Stage 1. All sorts of one of a kind pieces. A guy named Brad Conley restored it. A legitimate "One of none made" car.

He won't give it to me. I have asked.
Nice! I believe I remember reading that somewhere, however, not in too much detail.. Definitely one to wish for.

Wasn't there also a red car being contested as number 3? Or has that been debunked now? Been awhile since I looked into that..

It depends on how you define 'production'. Supposedly there were two...other...'69 Corvette ZL1s that were loaned out to people. One was red.

In 1972, our favorite big brother, the United States government required that all cars manufactured in the US have a maximum compression ratio of 8.75 to 1, as to be able to run unleaded gasoline. In 1971 GM started detuning there entire fleet of automobiles. Chrysler and Ford did not. In 1972 'big brother' threatened heavy fines and penalties if Ford and Chrysler did not comply. 1973 the Big three and AMC for that matter, had all complied with the compression requirements and pollution control requirements. This effectively ended the first muscle car era. Now with fleet gas mileage requirements coming in the mid 2020's, the current power craze we are blessed with will be changing. Chrysler announced that 2019 will be the last model year for the v-8 Hemi production. And so it begins ......

When I was a young boy the guy across the street worked for Chrysler and got a new car every other year. He had a Daytona, the other winged car that dodge put out. Those winged cars were the cats ass for sure!

Ah, but also in 1970, GM removed the corporate ban on engines larger than 400 cubic inches in intermediate cars.

That made the insurance companies very nervous, helping drive rates up and take a lot of younger drivers out of there rides, not me , l was too young.

I've got some pictures of that ZL-1 from the NCRS Show at Cypress Gardens in the 80's
