Is the ZL1 to escape the Gas guzzler tax?

Ok, this is a pretty loaded question. We all know that GM will not confirm the details of the car just yet.

Now here is my theory to why I will say "Yes, the ZL1 will not be hit with the gas guzzler tax."

  1. ZL1 LSA to receive 3.73 gearing, while the CTS-V coupe, LSA has 4.15's. and the fuel economy on the CTS-V is 12 in the city and 18 on the highway, which would get tagged for the gas guzzler tax (I think).
  2. The Ford Mustang GT-500 is now rated at 15mpg in the city and 23 on the highway, with the 5.4 liter supercharged engine.
  3. GM has stated that they are gunning to beat the Ford GT-500 in all aspects of the vehicle competition, I would have to assume this includes fuel mileage.
So there are a few points that I have found. My reference for the CTS-V coupe is off of the GM site here

While the Ford GT 500 is out of this months Motor Trend, April 2011, article Five Figure Phenoms, Page 34.

I may or may not be correct, but I would love to hear some in site on my theory. I know there are a lot of good engine builders out there, maybe they can shed some light on the subject.

I could be wrong... but I don't think it will beat the GT500 in mileage. The SS sits at 16/24 which is a tick above the GT500's 15/23. So tack on some weight, add a SC, etc. and I would imagine 14/21 maybe with the lower drive ratio.

Just my 2 cents.

As a side note: we all know no one cares about mileage on these cars except whether or not they have to pay gas guzzler tax.

Exactly. No one wants to pay the Guzzler tax, but if you buy a ZL1, you dont get it for fuel economy lol. if youre worried about that get a Volt! (or ANYTHING but a Prius!!)

i see the GT500 doesnt get hit with the tax, but doesnt a car have to have a combined average of 22.5 MPG? or is it only highway MPG that has to be better than 22.5?

Here is the Fuel Efficiency info, on CTS-V that uses the same engine, but a bit heavier:

EPA est. Fuel Economy City 12 MPG
EPA est. Fuel Economy Highway 18 MPG
Fuel Tank Capacity 18 gal

with these number, 12/18 I suspect it gets Tax Guzzler.

I believe not having an automatic transmission will affect sales of the ZL1 more then would the added gas tax tbh. Most serious buyers of this car will still be buy this car regardless of that tax being implemented. For some it just means holding backing on some mods after they first buy the car. Do I want to see a gas tax on this baby, heck no but it won't stop me from buying one if t happens.

I have talked about this before. I think that it is going to very close either way, I am sure that Chevy is doing everything they can to avoid the tax and still maintain a GT500 crusher. That is a tough combination with a heavier car. I have my fingers crossed but no matter which way it goes, I am buying my ZL1.

How much is the gas guzzler tax and how is it calculated?
Is it a yearly fee or a one time fee at purchase? Who collects the tax?
