Axle play?

Noticed I have a diff leak on the garage floor. Threw the car up on a lift and found that the fluid is coming out around one of the axles. Obviously the seal is trashed BUT how much play should that axle have with a trashed seal? I can move it up and down a bit. The other side is solid as a rock.

Can't access the video but I guess it depends on how you define "a bit". Definitely shouldn't be much (of course that depends on how I define "much"). Drain the fluid and see how much metal is in it.

Just a quick update. No metal in the case. Changed the seal and then the fluid. All is good. The play I was seeing was on both sides equally once i took it out of gear and had the brake off.
