Drag racers what gear are you running?

Ok to start I’ve done a ton of searches. What I didn’t find was what people are running for gears who actually drag race. I’m not so much concerned about ratio but more with brand and type. I installed a US gear 3.73 about a month ago and destroyed it at the drag strip Friday. I knew it was a street gear and there would be limitation but I thought my bolt on Camaro ss with a 150 shot wouldn’t destroy the gear but I was on a track with amazing prep and something had to give this time was the gear. I also twisted the splines of the left axle slightly too.

So now that I’m looking into upgrades I can’t seem to find a competition gear for our cars. Am I stuck doing the strange conversion? Any other options?

Thanks in advance

The ZL1 diff with 3.73 is solid and will hold what you've got. I have 1LE 3.91s with the 6L80 and SS diff, and I can consistently hit 1.5 60'

From the looks of the ring gear, I am going to say the pinion depth was the issue. Not the gear itself. Got any pattern pictures of the gear setup?

I think you’re right I was looking at pictures of the stock gear and the new gear and the patters is a a little light. I did the gear myself with the help of my dad who’s a master certified mechanic so we have the ability this was just the first gear I have done and he hasn’t done a gear swap in quite some time.

When it happened it was the perfect storm of amazing track prep and the car running the best it ever has so I think it could possibly have been a combination of housing flex and not properly set pinion depth. I have new parts on order and am going to give it another shot. I want to learn how to do it right that’s why I’m not having someone else install it.

How did this thread get this far and nobody asked about the setup on the car? Most importantly the transmission, converter if auto, tires (make, compound, size, wheel), and intake/camshaft. I saw this has a 150 shot - is that all in on a TPS switch on the hit, or is there a controller and ramp? All of those have tremendous influence on what the right gear for the car would be.

In general terms, a bolt on car with a cam will like 4.10s if it's stick, or 3.91s if it's automatic. I think even with a 150 shot, those are probably still the right gears, as long as it's on a progressive controller to keep the car hooked up off the line and through first gear.

As far as going to an expensive rear end like a strange - in hindsight, I wish I would have. I have had the rear rebuilt 3x due to various problems. I wish, at a minimum, I had take steps to strengthen all components the first time. I now have an LPW cover, which I think is a very important piece to reduce flex in the soft aluminum case, and it helps hold the ring gear caps down. Also, don't overlook the stock LSD - they all get soft, and you're better off just to buy a trutrac up front. At the end of the day, I have a noisy diff that I still don't fully trust, and I've nearly spent what it would have cost to replace the whole thing with an S60, including driveshaft and axles! Auto cars don't beat on the rear end nearly as hard, and they hold up a lot better at similar power levels to their stick-shift brethren.

That looks shallow to me. I'm no expert on setting up a rear end, but if you're just contacting the top-most part of the tooth you're really not taking advantage of all the strength that tooth can offer.

For me tire set up made a huge difference. I have a M6 car, and I blew apart the stock rear diff on a radial. I decided to go with the Strange S60 unit with 4.10 gears. Yes it is expensive, but it is a very tough unit. I did not want to keep pulling the diff because I kept breaking stuff. I switched to a bias ply Hoosier tire, and I went from consistent 2.0 60fts to consistent 1.6 60fts. A lot of people have success with the zl1 rear end, but it is hard to find them. Others have swapped the GM Performance gear set into their stock diff. It all depends on your set up and where you want to go with the car.

Yep, depends on the combo in question. I do 1.52 60ft with 3.23 gears(ZL1 diff).
If your planning to do a lot of drag racing,if I were you,I'd invest in a bigger/better diff than the stock 8.6" SS,even with the upgrades,it's still a 8.6" ring gear.It would give you piece of mind for sure.
