Seems like the '19 SS grille has a larger upper and lower grille openings for air flow than the ZL1's. Looks real close on the openings in front of the front wheels.

Maybe coolers 5 ,7 get a more air on the Zl1 facia . . . but the SS facia could've been massaged for the ZL1 instead of bypassing the whole thing . . .

Half of the lower intake is blocked by the crash beam behind it. The huge gaping mouth is mostly a styling consideration, not for greatly increased cooling capacity.

It's also about volume and cost. They sold 3k ZL1's in 2017, probably fewer in 2018 due to cannibalization from the 1LE. There's no way the bean counters would let them change it with maybe 4-4.5k units produced ... because they haven't "paid the bill yet" for the tooling on all those custom parts.

Put a V-8 in this LS trim version and watch sales bury any polarization problem. I like this look, the stance, the tires and wheels....I think it will sell very well.

I propose a two step program to follow your idea.
1. Take that 1LS V8 and give it the ZL1's 1LE treatment and call it Z/28.
2. Watch it print money

The old '16-'18 front end probably flows just as good. However, GM wanted the styling to look like the whole front end is one big predator style air vent.

That's a very real possibility.

Remember, a big consideration in the 2019 front end refresh was from a performance perspective (aero, cooling, etc).

I've seen both, the SS and the LS/LT cars in person. The LS/LT I really don't mind at all, and, in fact, I think the LT 1LE looks great!

The two things I. Just. Can't. Come. To. Terms with are:
1. The SS front end.
2. The rear tail lights...

... the rear tail lights, to me, could be a major upgrade to the 2016-18 version, but it's execution is just very... odd.

Here is why:
You are taking a pre-existing trunk lid and quarter panel light socket design, that was designed in a very angular, aggressive manner, to accommodate and integrate a tail light assembly, that was designed to be cohesive with the [original] design language of the major car; to now seemingly plopping in a new tail light assembly that is very round and softer in emotion.

The issue is integration, here. The design team did it with the lower portion of the trail lights (via the top edge of the rear bumper), but didn't or didn't do it very well with the outer side and top portion of the tail light.

The first picture is dissecting the tail lights on what doesn't seem cohesive.
The second and third pictures should present what I am saying pretty clear. The fourth and fifth pictures are examples I've seen that could be worked on and into the current design (angles and whatnot).
The sixth picture is the 16-18 design.
I really like your perspective. Your research, hypothesis, experimentation, offered solution and conclusion are undeniable... No arguments here.
You sir, are well schooled in scientific method.

Well constructed, Bravo!

Thank God. They might have messed that up too. The ZL1 front end is amazing looking. All my opinion of course.

I dont think the article states that the front wasnt changed due to it being polarizing. I think it simply states that the zl1 didnt receive the polarizing front of the SS which is totally true. Seems like totally factual reporting.

The new front and rear for that matter are polarizing.

I didn't read in the article that the zl1 didnt get the new front because it is polarizing, just that it isnt getting it.

This is simple.

They aren't spending Millions of dollars to change the giant side stamping.

This is the El-Cheapo refresh. Very little actual content. Fascia change costs are minimal (plastic).

Side stamping press changes? Not gonna do it.

Make the new tailights fill the old gap so we can keep costs low and profit high.
