Will the new Z06 fit the criteria for supercar?
In short, this.
Was wandering through the Gold Coast of Chicago today with a friend and we took a few detours, visited the Bentley dealer and a showroom with a Stingray sitting out front. He's a big import guy but he definitely gave the stingray its props which was cool. Eventually we got into a interesting conversation about the Z06 due out, since I'm currently planning to purchase one I may have gotten a bit more heart into it but I told him I figured the new Z06 would fit well as a supercar. He looked at me as if I was crazy, even when mentioning the ZR1 he would not budge on anything more then a high end sports car. Mind you, he's all about the Lamborghinis and in terms of cars prefers imports but I felt he was narrowing the definition of supercar down to only price range and name brand, of which I informed him Vettes have gotten regular kills of cars far beyond their price range. Nonetheless it piqued my curiosity. I wanted to ask you guys, was I overzealous? Does the Corvette belong in the realm of high end sports car or would it be appropriate to label the Z06 and ZR1 trims supercar? What would be the adequate definition of a supercar as it seems to vary from site to site and enthusiast to enthusiast. Has it changed over time? I've heard of hypercars as well but being younger I wanted some insight from some folks who have been around the block so to speak. NOTE: I did post this in the Corvette site as well, wanted to see how everyone felt. |

I would say so. The Z06 has been a supercar for years, in my opinion, and the next one will be a blast. I think it would be safe to argue that some of our Camaros, especially those built by the likes of Nickey Chicago, Hennessey, and Lingenfelter, fall into the supercar category, too.

C7 Z06 is already faster than the C6 ZR1.

Super car numbers, not supercar price tag. Doesn't fit both super car check off boxes so I'd say no. Not a super car status.

I'm a no. A supercar isn't just about stats. It's about a certain amount of exclusivity too, and regardless of which version it is, it is still a Corvette.
McLaren 12C, Ferrari 458 & F12, Lamborghini Gallardo & Murcielago, and a few others. Even the 911 Turbo or GT2/3 variants aren't supercars in my book (maybe because I work in Manhattan and see 911s lining the streets). McLaren P1, Porsche 918, La Ferrari ... hyper-cars. That said .. if I had $300K to spend on a new vehicle right now, C7 Z06 and a Z/28 would be a great combo (Z/28 would allow me to take both my sons for a blast instead of 1 at a time). Although I personally believe the Z06 isn't a supercar, it it were my money, I wouldn't care one iota. |

True...if you want to compare a new generation to an old one that's fine.
Also, you are making the assumption that I think speed determines whether or not it is a supercar. I do not. I know GM claims they aren't building a C7 ZR1, but I don't buy that. Would think they would sell less Z06 if people know a superior model is coming out. And if they did it would beat the socks of the C7 Z06. Agreed?

I have enough reason to believe there may not be a C7 ZR1 considering what's in development right now.

Even if so, wouldn't change my mind about the Z06 not being a supercar. I've stated my opinion and do not have to justify it.

If I can afford it, then it can't be a supercar.

Corvettes are not supercars. They weren't in the C6 generation, they aren't in the C7 generation, and they won't be in the C8 generation. Even the most hardcore Corvette is, at its heart, a mainstream car. Doesn't matter how fast it goes, or how crazy it looks, or how expensive it is, its all going to be based off of a car that starts in the $50,000 range and sells tens of thousands of units. Such a basis does not make for a supercar.
That said, I should make it clear that I don't care about supercars and I'm glad that Corvettes aren't supercars. I don't see cars as being status symbols (though I accept many people do) and consider garaging a car to be wasting the time of the engineers who designed the car in the first place.

The Corvette is in a similar class with the GTR and the 911:
Too expensive and powerful to be mainstream, but not enough to be a supercar. |
