What happened to my rocker bolts?
All;
I had recently completed a cam swap on my 2014 ls3. Everything went together well and on first start I was super happy with how quiet the motor was. Along with this I had good oil pressure right away. On one of the cool down cycles during the first couple starts I checked the dipstick and noticed a couple of small pieces of metal on the dipstick, my heart went to the floor. These small pieces were magnetic. I went ahead and did my first oil change as I was planning on doing anyway and confirmed some more very small metal pieces in that oil. I cut open my oil filter and only found a couple of metal pieces. After talking with my tuner and parts supplier, a VERY reputable Camaro shop I went ahead and pulled the valve covers to start my inspection process. What I found during my inspection was interesting. All of my rockers appeared to be moving as normal but what was abnormal was my rocker bolts. As you can see in the pictures I attached, some of these bolts have rather deep scoring marks, this is where I believe I am getting my metal from. The rockers were upgraded (or downgraded) with the comp trunion Kit. Yes my CHE kit is on the way. Pushrods were properly measured with the appropriate preload. I followed the EOIC method for torquing the bolts and did not exceeded 22 ft lbs with my quality torque wrench. Can anyone explain how I ended up with this scoring to my rocker bolts? Almost all of them have some sort of mark, some deeper than others. I do have 16 new OEM bolts on the way. Thank you! |

I seriously doubt this is the source of the metal, Does the scoring on the bolts catch a nail? And what color flakes are you seeing? Gold, gray, Shiny?

So yes, the rockers were installed in the proper position. The deeper scoring on a couple of the bolts does catch a nail, some of them are obviously deeper than others. The flakes are shiny and magnetic.

read post 7 and 12. Seems you cant run the comp trunion upgrade with the stock rocker bolts. I think i have a set if you need them.

I doubt that is the source of the metal. Even if metal did get rubbed off those bolts, how would the metal pieces get out and into the crankcase? The pieces of metal would be caught inside the trunnion hole and would only get out upon disassembly.
