Question Read These Plugs

Took these pics a while back.

WTF is the build-up on these?

I run E85 mostly. I have used Lucas E85 treatment off and on, but...

white/ashy color usually indicates overheating. how have oil / coolant temps been?

Its a guessing game..too much oil blow by with the oil diluted from the mass amount of Corn fuel compared to Gasoline? Corn flakes..... Or too lean also a possibility.... not a good one either. It is also vitally import the gap you have for the fuel you use, and the proper heat range plug and how many miles on it until it looks like that? What Ngk IX number? I use tr6ix, others use tr551x and don't do corn and mine are pretty pristine every time I pull the which is sort of every 10 k or so to inspect.. and I don't ever attempt a re-gap on iridium. Here I would say its just from poor fuel quality and being not blown why you want to run corn...its best to cool Forced Induction engines as it sprays so much more fuel and cools the combustion process...……. which builds up excess heat FI..... straight from NGK

After looking around online I’d say oil is getting into the combustion chamber and you might be experiencing higher than normal temperatures. Those threads look coated in oil man

Edit- Fuel additives will also cause the ashy build up. Are those stock plugs?

I would say fuel additives. The threads look like they are coated with some sort of penetrating lube or oil causing the ends to discolor as the fluid runs onto them. That ash color is probably what the whole end looked like before the oil got on them.

That's a lot of oil. Did you seal the intake rocker bolts? Or maybe check the valve seals.

It's been having some oil consumption issues after I had a friend do my Heads, Cam and all for me. He is a Nissan Engineer and has a shop with a lift behind his house. I'm sure he is competent, but might not know everything about the LS3 aka L99 engines.

I did a Mishimoto catch can and it catches some oil, but not near as much as it consumes.

I think it's eating about a qt every 3 or 4 weeks. I drive it hard and about 350 miles a week now since my beater car is down.

It doesn't smoke at all, but you can smell a tiny tinge of oil in the exhaust (catless).

Maybe he did forget to seal the rocker arm bolts. I'll ask him Friday.

Valve seals are new and came on the TFS GenX 255 heads. I run them with the TSP VVT 3.2 cam kit and it came with polished PAC .660's with Ti retainers.

As a side note...

Had my other friend look at my logs, too. The car was running lean and had some knock retard.

We've been adding fuel to the tune off my daily drive to work logs. It's running a lot stronger now.

I'd start with the above suggestion of sealing the rocker arm bolts and see what that gets you if it wasn't done.

How long have you been working on this tune? I know you were on another forum or two working with some guys on it but don't remember when you made the posts.

A quart every 1000 to 1200 miles is a lot. I don't drive my car hard but I do put on about 600 miles a week. No oil consumption issues.

Valve guide seals improperly installed?
Should not be using that much oil. Plugs are oil fouled.

I'm giving up on this car.

Trans threw p0700 and p0716 codes tonight.

It was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.

With the tuning problems, oil consumption issues that's had me chasing my tail, and the frustration it has caused me over the past yer of owning it, I'm putting it up for sale. If it doesn't sell, I'll trade it in.

Fwiw...

Everyone on my local forum knows the issues I've had so not selling it without disclosing the issues.

$12k in mods and labor down the drain.

Lesson learned!

I'll just buy a factory hotrod with warranty next and leave it stock.

ZL1 or ZO6 is next.

I'm with you Mark, I have a high HP Supercharged L99 and I drive it HARD.

I have not added a single drop of oil to it in the 2 years I've been driving it
