Not a snow guy, but I've heard on here these cars do get squirrely in the snow, even at very low speeds....t/c on? off?...could be problematic for a new driver...dunno for sure...

If the kids responsible go for it. My parents got me a 68 chevelle when I was 15, me and my dad restored it, put a 427, a Borge Warner 4 speed and a 9" in the car. I didn't do to much stupid stuff in it when I was 16 minus tearing through the tires and it remained in awesome condition till I sold it for my first camaro, 02 6 speed SS.

No. he should buy his own car, and that way he will learn responsibility. Also, how will you feel when he wraps the car around a tree with his buddy in it. Gonna happen, or some variation, so no.

I told my son when he was 12 that any money he saved up, I would match for a car when he turned 16. I didn't realize he'd save up so much--over $5,000! So we bought a 1LT in June last year, 2 months before he got his lic., so he could spend all summer practicing. He works 3 days a week to pay for gas, and half the car payment. He did great when driving alone, as we saw him numerous times around town driving responsibily. But as I always told him, you gotta watch out for others. And as other Camaro owners will attest, others like f'in with Camaros.
On the way to work, another 16 year old in a Mustang was messing with him, flew by him, then slammed on his brakes on a yellow light. My son rearended him, doing $7500 in damage (but zero to the Mustang!!). Yes, that stunk, was his fault, but he didn't get hurt, and learned what we meant by defensive driving. Bottonline, I don't regret helping him get his Camaro. He does take great care of it, and has learned the art of defensive parking too! And regards to weather, we ended up getting a whole new set of Pirelli Ice tires from tirerack.com. Living in Chicago area, it was a must. Just swapped out wheels in November, and now just swapped and put the summer 20's back on. It ended up being less than $1000. You only have one first car, and if you can swing it, why not!!?? The pride on his face is priceless. 1st pic is the accident...2nd is after getting her back a couple weeks ago. |

This is why you don't get 300+ HP cars for teenagers. I know we all love to spoil our kids, but they need some experience before putting them behind the wheel of such a potent machine. Let them drive something less impressive for a few years. It could have been far worse than monetary damage.

1. If he is a speed demon he will speed in any car he has 2. It is a lot safer to be in an accident in a Camaro vs pre 2000 Camry or something with half the airbags not working. 3. why not let him enjoy something special when he is this age if you can afford it? |

Horrible blind spots with these cars, personally when i was 16 no way i should be driving a car like this, i had plenty of fast cars when i first started driving but none with the poor vision you get out of our 5th gen camaros

Get him a 1LS and teach him to drive stick. Far more badass and 99% of his reckless friends won't physically be able to drive it. Cheaper, too. And way more fun!
I drove a V6 with auto and a V6 with manual and it really brings out the sports car in the Camaro. With the auto it felt like I was driving a peppy 2 door Malibu. |
