Air impact gun

I'm looking to go get an impact gun tomorrow to go with my new 5.2 CFM, 20 gallon air compressor.

My question is, how much torque should the gun have? I'm mostly going to be removing lug nuts and doing exhaust installs.

Thanks guys.

I like the NitroCat composite and this one is smaller and lighter but still 1/2" size.

By the way.

Can anyone tell me what size couplers and connectors I need, 1/4 or 3/8. I'm only gonna be using the compressor for automotive purposes.

I went to my local Home Depot and saw a sign that confused me. The sign said to use 1/4 size fittings for nailers and to use 3/8 size fittings for automotive tools.

They had all kinds of male and female fittings but they were all 1/4 size. They had no 3/8 size. How could it be that it's so hard to find 3/8 size male and female fittings.

1/4" should be fine for what you are going to be doing. Just remember to get sockets and extensions that are made for impact use, NEVER use standard sockets, impact sockets are usually black not chrome. I have sets from IR , and don't forget lube for the tool.

Thank you sir. I appreciate the advice. Im looking at a set of reversible Ingersol rand impact sockets.

Here is a link. Anyone have any experiment with these?

Anyone know what size lug nuts our camaro has?

Maybe I'm simplistic but this Kobalt impact has never let me down.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_100966-47120..._-sgy%20air134

I use it on my 60gal/170PSI(set to 150psi) upright. A couple of drops of bostich oil before use and it's good to go. I think that it is rated for 90PSI so I keep the regulator dialed over 10 at 100psi.

I am not a full time mechanic. I am merely a computer engineer who set out one Saturday morning for an electric impact and came home with the compressor. :/

your 20 gallon compressor will work ,but you will have to build pressure back up every 2nd or 3rd lugnut you remove
the airgun will suck down that 20 gallons of air quickly , meaning you will not be able to remove or tighten many lugnuts in a row

I can't wait to get my Ingersoll rand impact. I realize I might have to pause more often than id like due to the 20 gallon tank size. But like my neighbor told me, I'm not part of a nascar pit crew, changing one wheel at a time should be sufficient time to allow the compressor to build pressure.

Now I just have to figure out this male and female fitting business.

Freaking confusing dealing with these automotive and industrial fittings. They are not compatible !!!

What size fitting are you using with the gun? 3/8 or 1/4?

To be honest, I would pick up the fittings from Harbor Freight, there quite a bit cheaper there and one of those things that you can't really break.
