I went with factory sizes. It handles and corners the same as it was designed for. Pirelli Scorpion Ice + snows. Staggered.

I also went with factory sized tires for my 2LT Non-RS:
19", Pirelli Scorpion Ice + snows. Tires and rims ~ $1,500 from the Tire Rack.

We have had 3 snow storms so far here where I live in Vermont.
Only time I had any trouble was this morning, in that greasy sand salt slushy snow.

Nothing big, just a little hard getting traction on some starts.

I guess I would recommend going with slightly narrower tires if you can.

I dropped my rim size down to 17" from the stock 20" that came on my LT/RS.
Got a really good deal on some blizzak ws70's. Paid $1200 all in install included.
Slays those snowy roads!

Ditto.
The only thing I do not like is the automatic shifts back to first when you stop, and I have remember to put it back in second.

No problems so far, did pirelli sottozeros 18inch so I could buy a nice-ish looking wheel, the stabilitrack really really keeps the car straight.

I ordered my tires from tirerack and went to buffalo to pick em up cause UPS are jerks. I ordered some wheels off of ebay from some really cool guys: http://www.elites-wholesale.com (Free shipping to Canada included not like Tirerack] and bought the sensors off of http://www.genuinegm.com/ when I was down there. Also really cool guys.

The whole plan actually worked out well except tirerack wasn't my cup of tea to deal with. [I know they sponsor the forum don't kill me] but I wasn't really impressed, especially since you can get OEM TPMS sensors for $36 in the states and they charge 50 for non OEM ones. Anyway to each their own, but they should at price match their competitors if your gonna buy the exact same rim.

*If you are using tirerack, try selecting just rims for an LS and you will see a variety of LS wheels 18inch cheaper/different in the selection then when you select winter/tire combo. I think they do that so you don't buy a chrome wheel and get mad at them if the salt eats it, but there are some happy mediums in there you may like.

roughly:
$800 tires
$600 wheels
$150 TPMS
$ 40 installation
