I wonder if the original owner got his car back?

It's likely in impound, as evidence.

This is why you meet at the bank when doing private party transactions...

Poor guy who bought the car is going to get shafted too, he probably won't get any money back for a long time. And the guy whos car got stolen isn't going to get it for some time too. Not to mention he has no money to go buy something else if it was his DD.

They likely won't pay for it since it was found in fine shape. It may be titled as a theft recovery though.

When I bought my Camaro, I bought it private party from the original owner and I paid them with a cashier's check. I handed him the check and he handed me the title and the keys and I drove off. & I thought if I was in his shoes I would have been a little bit more shrewd.
But at least my check was good. As mentioned always do private party transactions at the bank |

People often make this mistake when selling thinking that cashiers checks are as good as cash. That is not the case and a person should never accept a cashiers check unless you can take it to the issuing bank to cash it prior to completing the transaction or you can call the issuing bank to verify it valid.
Even if the check is not fraudulent, the buyer can easily have a check drafted and then 20 minutes later call the bank and say it was lost or stolen. They now have a check in their hands that most people will assume is as good as cash but once deposited is absolutely worthless. In most cases, the police will then tell you it is a civil matter and to take the buyer to court. |
