Manual Transmission Options

Does anyone know what manual transmission options may be considered for the V8? I hope it has a better feel than the 2008 Mustang GT. I drove one a couple of months ago, and it was just sloppy with long throws (not to mention a 5 speed instead of 6). Maybe I'm just spoiled by my RX-8 tranny, but it has a very direct sporty feel and with my short shifter all it takes is a flick of the wrist to change gears. I'm hoping GM follows that route so we don't end up with a sports car that feels like I'm changing gears in a truck.

not 100% certainty but a good guide for 09

The L79 doesn't list any manual transmission.

The LS3 and LS7 list the Tremec TR6060
the MM6 is rated for 500lb-ft
the 6L85M (MZ6) is also a TR6060 box but is rated for 428lb-ft
The sixth-generation Corvette with the Z51 option uses the MZ6 version of the six-speed, with ratios developed for the M12 which was used in the Cadillac CTS-V. These ratios are higher in first, second, and third gears than the MM6, as well as a lower-ratio fifth gear to increase top speed for the Z51 option.

The TR6060 is the direct replacement for the T56.

As far as feel goes... I would probably expect more of the same.

I haven't driven the new Vette. I wonder how the transmission feels compared to the Mustang. I would imagine more firm and shorter throw.

Thanks for the link, Mythic. I'll have to do some research on these trannies. So, is the TR6060 basically just a T56 with higher torque ratings? Or was it a complete redesign?

A bit of both.

According to what I could find the bolt points are in the same spots. It is literally a direct swap-out. But its casing is modified to be stonger but thinner and lighter. The internals are beefier. The gears are supposed to be thicker, to handle the extra torque.

Tremec doesn't have any data up on their site yet but

Great info.

As for the shifter feel in a Mustang GT I can concur that it feels like shifting a truck I got a feeling we won't be disappointed in the manual tranny of the V8 Camaro though.

I think a T56 can make a base V8 and a TR6060 in a high-output option. It would be nice to get the dual-disk with the TR6060 (which I'm sure would be the only way to get that tranny) but it doesn't seem to be out of the question.

I've had a '95 with the Borg Warner T56 and liked it after I swapped the shifter for a Hurst Billet Competition Plus and later a B&M Ripper. That transmission shifted smooth as butter until about 100K miles and about 100+ passes down the 1320. It was always smooth and engaged each gear confidently. I'm sure the shifter played a role but I think it's a good tranny and would be a great choice.

my understanding of what I've found on the GM sites is that the T56 is going away completely. The TR6060 is beefeir. But is still intended to replace not be in addition to the T56.

Which shifter did you like better? Did they each provide shorter throws or just more direct throws? Thanks.

I don't mind the stang's shifting (although that could be because this is the only stick I've driven consistently). I kinda like the slightly longer shifts, it helps give me a better "feel" for the car.

I think I liked the B&M better because they include eccentric washers to allow to to move the shifter a little farther forward or backward to suit your driving position. I will tell you that I didn't like the single-piece shifter shaft on the B&M. The throws seemed to be about the same, if I remember correctly, but I wore-out the Hurst shifter's pivot bushing pretty quick from powershifting all the time. The single-piece shifter shaft on the B&M made for pulling the tranny out more time consuming because you have to remove the shifter to pull the tranny.
