My Key Fob is falling apart
Hey everyone,
I need some advice on replacing a key fob (WITH remote start) I have that has definitely seen better days. I searched through some threads but they were mostly all pretty old and not sure if still relevant. I have a 2010 Camaro 2LT/RS. I never went through with the factory recall for the key fobs as I like my key and fob in 1 piece. The key and circuit board are fine, however all the face button have fallen out due to wear and tear. what I would like to do is get a new Fob shell and move over my circuit board, key and battery to the new fob. the problem is i'm reading that my existing key wont fit into new fobs as the angle they are set in are different. Is there any place I can purchase an OEM shell that would take all my old components? GMpartsDirect only sells the fob without remote start and im not sure if all these ebay/amazon options are able to take my existing key. Anyone have any experience with this and can assist? Thanks! |

I bought fobs off of ebay, but they were not exactly the same and I never could get the key to lock in the closed position. I ended up keeping a hairband to slide up over the key to hold it closed.
Since then though, I did the key recall as the fob wore out again and I was hoping that the dealer would just give me a new fob That was wishful thinking.

Get the key recall done for nothing, then move the blade back into the new fob.

Sorry guys I was not clear with my response. The OP was stating the key blade is not pinned at the correct angle. I was saying get the recall done, take the new blade they cut and place it in the new fob the OP needs to buy.

I have never seen that much wear on a FOB before.

Wow, there is no saving that FOB. Purchase a new FOB / blade from EBay and take the old and new to a local locksmith with a laser cutting machine. Approx cost: $40 new blank FOB + $35 locksmith. Turn that "wear & tear" key in to the dealer under the recall and get 2 new keys (with no FOB remotes).
*Program the EBay FOB / key first BEFORE you have the key replaced under the recall. Programming is simple you do on your own with the original keys and DIC menu.

Mine did the same thing (2009 build). I RTV 'd the keys back in and bought a silicone jacket off Ebay.

lol yea I figured the pic would get at least some responses. Thats 6 years of constant use plus I'm sure I dropped it a bunch of times. So I guess the best bet is to get a new fob WITH the uncut blade, go to a locksmith and get it cut. Then get the fob programmed.
I did see this on Amazon however. Anyone try this out? Can the more enlightened individuals who are on this board tell from the picture that the alignment is correct so the key will close? https://www.amazon.com/KeylessOption...+key+fob+shell Thanks! |
