TPMS question.

I see you guys talking about having the TPMS sensors reset after getting new tires, and wondered why.

If you put the wheels back on the corners where they came from, is the reset necessary?

I am getting ready to replace my tires and didn't want to pay for something I didn't have to.

Thanks,

Lee

Discount Tire told me not to worry about it when I warned them. It seems that was one thing they did get right and put the wheels back on the same corners they came from. You have a 2011 like me, so no special equipment needed to recalibrate, but if the tire guys mess up, the extra effort and expense should be on them, not you.

Good point... I think that if they go back on the same corner, no reset would be needed, but the matter of tracking each wheel's TPMS unit at the tire shop might be difficult (especially given the level of moronosity and incompetence exhibited at SOME shops!).

Hell, I shuffle and rotate and change wheels/ tires so often that I don't even bother resetting the TPMS any longer: If one of my sensors indicates a pressure problem, I can either find it visually or use this ancient device from the days of yore, called a tire pressure gauge.

If you return the wheels to the same corners then no reset needed. Tire guy should have a universal tpms reset tool, all new cars have then not just the camaro.

Dealership keeps messing up the location of my sons TPMS sensors. Front left shows as back left, etc... he almost blew up a tire by using the DIC to read pressure.

I hope you gave him an earfull and then took him to buy a good tire pressure gauge.

Hey thanks all. I appreciate the responses.

I'll just pay attention and see that the wheels go back where they came from.

when he asked me why the pressure number wasn't changing, I looked at his DIC (no homo) and immediately saw the back tire was past 56psi, while the one he was filling remained at 26... he was sort of embarrassed when I brought it to his attention...

Actually as lot of cars are using indirect TPMS. It uses the ABS pulses to determine difference from a set reference (button on the dash to set) Mazda and others use this method. I LOVE knowing the exact pressure in the tires though (the Camaro TPMS sensors agree with my $75 dial race pressure gage)

A tire pressure guage is more accurate anyway, but if you are switching your wheels around that much you may want to invest in the reset tool. I got this one off Ebay for when I change out my summer and winter wheels.
