The ZL1 is a no brainer IMO as far as being the appropriate nameplate for this car (please no IROC-Z). The only thing that has me stumped is how would GM use this nameplate when SLP purchased the rights to use the ZL1 name and will come out with their own version? Doesn't make sense if that really is the case.

Sometimes I wonder if these sources are some dudes reading Camaro5, lol.

can we put timer on the site, like we did for the count down of the production date, but this time do it for the auto show?

There are many arguments to be made for all names (except maybe IROC....)...I think that's the main reason all these rumors are spreading that they haven't decided on a name.

For instance,

Z28:
PROS -- For most of the Camaro's existance, it was the "Top Dog" model. It is possibly the most storied name in Camaro history, and everyone knows Z28 = Camaro.

CONS -- The first generation Z28 was a race-spec Camaro (similar to today's SSX concept), built and restricted by Trans Am guidelines.

ZL1:
PROS -- In it's day, this Central Office Production Order set of Camaros installed a 427ci big block engine called the "ZL-1" into 69 1969 Camaros. These cars undisputedly produced the most power out of all Camaros in history.

CONS -- "ZL-1" was not the name of the car. And this car was meant to be the king of the drag strip, not intended to handle well with all that weight of a big block over its nose. In addition, only 69 of these cars were ever produced...out of the millions of Camaros built and sold over the years.

I'll reserve my opinions for later...but that's how I've read the arguments...the only thing both 'sides' can agree on is this car will be completely bada$$.

They cant, they lost the rights to the name when they sold it to SLP during the bankruptcy. Plus, IROC's assets were liquidated after it went bankrupt. Unless he knows something that we don't. Or Car and Drivers just wrong.

May I suggest Camaro ZR1 ??

PRO's: EVERYONE would KNOW it is the TOP DOG in the lineup, just like its' older brother. It would not interfere with the Vette Identity (in my opinion). It would mean, its the highest you can go in the lineup for BRUTE power. Still leaves room for the lightweight ALhpa Z28 next time around! And the ZR1 name could withstand upgrades as time goes on! It is only THREE digits, not Six as in !ROC-Z, thus saving $$ on nameplates. (hehe)

CONS: It is not as historical as a 60's name, but correct for todays time.

I don't think that GM will be able to use ZL1 on the new Camaro only because of it currently being used by SLP, even if GM can get the rights to use it. I do not think that IROC will be able to be used either for several different reasons as already stated above. Although Z28 makes the most sense to me, Chevy did not ask me for my opinion. So it sounds like a brand new nameplate that has NOT been used before. My best guess is: TOP GUN. It should not cost too much to buy the rights to use the movie name and should fit the car very well based on the information that has been gathered so far.

Maybe GM bought the rights to the ZL1 name back from SLP?

I've got to disagree. ZR1 is a Corvette nameplate...

Considering SLP jumped on that name like there was no tomorrow...AND that they've already developed/advertised their ZL1....personally, I don't think that's a good possibility.

how about we call it the "HP Edition" in internal documents and then call it the "Z28" when it launches? doesn't that sound like a good idea?

Nameing it ZL1 would be a mistake, wasn't the ZL1 the baddest pony car of them all and only 3 or 4 of them made?? If thats the case the ZL1 should have the LS9 not the LSA.
