Build my garage.

I have a project on the go and I know I can count on the Camaro5 community to carry me through.

I want to build a garage!

I started in July but the process of dealeing with the town and the various deptartments has taken its toll and I have backed off to regroup. We now plan on a May build so I have time to get it right.

Here's your chance TJ!

If you want to share what a garage needs, what you wish you had or some short comings of your own build. I would appreciate any input as I try to finalize the plans.

I will add more info as we go along, so start with basics and we can get more technical later.

Thanks to all

One thing to keep in mind, there never big enough. Bult a 24' x 24' pole barn 12 years ago, wish I would have went 24' x 32'. Its still nice though. Go as big as your wallet will allow.

Yes, size is important. I am looking at 1081 sq ft., 5 car ( 4 + workshop ), L shaped.
23' x 37' ( 4 car ) with a 10' x 23" side work shop/clean room.

My 2 cents:
Make sure to wire it with more receptacles than you'd ever think you'll use. Pipe it for multiple drops for air.

Plus a 220 outlet for the lift.

Here is my 2 cents.

Ensure that you have 10ft or 12ft ceilings. I recently installed a lift into my garage so that I could stack my Camaros for the winter. With 9ft 8 inches the fit is very tight. If I could get a foot or two it would make life much easier.

The other suggestion that I have is that you install a side lift on your garage door rather than an overhead lift. The side lift has a self locking mechanism and is much more secure, in the case of a break and enter.

Being an architectural technologist, I will offer some free advice, the 37'-0" will be too tight. Try to go 40'-0". In width, try to stick to even numbers (cheaper for construction since you are paying for trusses @ 2'-0" o.c. anyways) and as far as depth goes, 23'-0" is an oddball measurement with trusses as well. Truss companies will generally make 24''0" trusses more economical than 23''-0" trusses. For snow load, go with a steeper pitch on the roof depending upon where you live.
One last suggestion, for your man-door, if you are putting it close to one corner, move it at least 2'-0" from the corner so you build some shelves or put a compressor behind it thereby saving valuable space.
