Only the four cylinder engines use 5 or less quarts. For future reference.

Owner manuals are a fantastic reference when used.

I think the capacity is officially called a "shit-ton" which, when converted, is 8 quarts.

First time the dealer changed mine, they only put in 6. I didn't check it till I got home. I bought two more, put them in, drove back to them to bitch and get reimbursed for the two quarts. I figured they knew the SS took 8!

How do you conduct an oil change without knowing how much oil to put back? Didn't the 5 qt pan you drained the old oil into overflow all over your garage floor?

Seriously, you really shouldn't be touching anything under the hood.

Wow 8qt synthetic, I thought 6+ on the LS2 was expensive! Seriously look @ some of the diesels take 2x that and the big trucks forget about it. With all the changes in oils and such service is getting crazy.

We do a 12qt transmission flush recommended every 30k miles it can get very expensive with Dex VI. I know manufactures say never change ATF but I can say first hand when you see how bad the old fluid looks I'm a believer in flush. 30K may be soon for synthetic ATF but with a rebuild often costing more than the value of the car its a good investment.

GM says oil capacity is 8 qts, I only add 7 quarts then start it, let it warm up then let it settle and check the levels, add more as needed. If you add 8 qts you run the risk of overfilling the oil because the oil capacity includes oil stuck in the cooler and other places that does not drain out. Just an FYI. I gained my info from Ted Jannetty.

I've seen it can hold up to 8.6 qts. I've always put 8. Dealer tried to charge me for 9 qts's.
