Old Oil?

Hey folks, I was getting ready to do an oil change and I found some oil that was left over from one of my past changes. The container has 3 qts left and had the lid on, from me thinking back it's probably 2-3 years old. Is there any harm in using it or should I get rid of it and buy new? Thanks.

My thought is; if your concerned enough to ask then for peace of mind DON'T use it. Oh, if you find a container of gas from the same time frame I wouldn't use that either! Have a wonderful day!

I always have extra oil for any number of reasons. It won't go bad.

Open the lid and look in without jostling it to see if there is any water in from condensation it would be on top of the oil.

Thanks for the input! I'm going to go ahead and use it. I don't see any condensation 102SS, thanks for the tip.

See if the container has an effective date. If you are in a pinch then use it, just change your oil sooner.

Doesn't oil float on water?

As long as the additives haven't settled out, it's pretty much same as new.

Manufacturers typically suggest a 5 year shelf life max, though how much of that is marketing and how much is science is an ongoing debate.

Actually oil floats on water so any condensation would sink.
That being said I would and do use old unused oil.
