More tire choices and a gearing advantage are the two biggest reasons.

Can the gearing also be a disadvantage on bigger tracks?

You can also shod tires width shorter diameter (like Z/28 spec 305/30/19) and drop the car height without causing ill effects on suspension geometry.

Unless you run out of gears at the track, I'd doubt it. That said, I need to shift to the fifth gear in one of the local tracks' straightway, which costs a bit of time since you can't rush that long throw from 4th to 5th.

It really depends on the track, since it might cost you in some corners since you might run out of revs in long sweeper turns and be forced to use a taller gear, but you usually more than make up for those losses in other turns. The average RPMs is a very good indicator. Our engines obviously make more HP in higher RPMs, and the average RPMs roughly indicate the average HP you were able to put down. I take logs through a Bluetooth OBD II controller during track days, and figuring out the average RPMs is trivial once you have the data. For me, dropping to 19" wheels have substantially increased average RPMs, by a few hundred RPMs depending on the track.

Ok makes sense. I don't mind being slowed down since I do more autocross than road courses. I'm guessing smaller wheels are better for autocross too.

I think they are between 22-25 pounds per wheel. I'm in Pittsburgh area as well ( robinson). Maybe we can meet up some time for a track day or a cruise.
I'm in Johnstown, East of you guys, I will be doing more track days at Pitt Race next year.

I'll most definitely be at PittRace this year for the PDE events

I instructed at the PDE's with Jack a few year's back for a couple of summers but then "life" got in the way.

Look forward to driving the new South track section as well!

Yes. Lower top end speed. I intend to go 19s for lower center of gravity and change my rear end diff to the L99 rear diff.

SKip the 19's and go for 18's if you have the brake clearance. Way more tire choices if you really get into tracking. Plus they are cheaper.

Way more tire choices where. Did you forget what car you drive. For M3s and so on yes but not for our cars. Some of us don't want roller skate wheels on our cars.

The run from the new Turn 4 thru 6 is pretty cool, downhill then climb out exit of 6, lotsa elevation change there. Kinda miss running the old North track's 2-4 combo though. Still enjoy old # 5

im no expert but unless you are doing a texas mile or something, i would leave the gear alone. going to low profile 19s made the gearing on my car perfect. i have to go to 5th gear at VIR but at my home track, im at 6400 rpm at the end of the longest straight. 4th gear pulls like 3rd used to now. its your car and im just giving an honest opinion but at least research it.
