I was reading Road and Track today at work, and was looking through some of the new concept cars, and came across the 08 honda accord concept. Under the features list, it said it will include a "variable cylinder shutoff" for fuel economy. Apparently, when you're just cruising it shuts off 2 cylinders, instead of firing all 6 all the time. Has anyone heard anything about this technology, and is it possible that it could be implemented in the 5thgen?

yeah, the Cadillac 16 does that. V-16 shuts off up to 12 cyl when cruising. then opens them all back up for 1001 hp!!!

i hope the maro has it, i'm hoping for 20mpg city and about 28hwy, but the gto gets 17/25, so i guess we'll see

It was the original plan to have 4 cyl shut down while cruising to hopefully get around 33 mpg. That was a while back though. who knows what has changed since the concept-to-production chain started.

"Cylinder deactivation" is currently used by GM as well as MOPAR. (not sure about Ford)

In asking those who own a vehilce with this feature, they have all said you cannot notice it at all. And I haven't heard of any issues.

I haven't heard anything as the whether the Camaro would have this feature, but I wouldn't rule it out.

I'm almost certain I read somewhere prety recently a higher-up practically guranteeing this technology being in the Camaro.

They call it "active fuel management", I believe.

I think MerF is right, I too remember reading that the Camaro would have it.....I also think MerF is right that GM calls is Active Fuel Management (AFM). It used to be called Displacement on Demand.

Chrysler calls theirs MDS or Multiple Displacement System.

It's actually been around for a long time....It was experimented with it during WWII. GM started pushing the benefits of it in the 70's/80's. GM "pioneered" it in 1981 in the Cadillac lineup using Caddy's L62 "V8-6-4" engine. Mistu followed up with their version a year later (which is where Chrysler basically got theirs from). Benz did a version in the late 90's as well (which further developed Chrysler's version).

Chrysler, GM, and Honda all currently have a version of this available.

I'm pretty sure GM is using it in the Impala and the Malibu.

I'm pretty sure, as everyone else has stated, that it will find its way to the Camaro. The MPG war is huge and its going to be a huge selling point for GM as they already have like 8 or 9 vehicles that get 30+

Displacement on Demand has a nice ring to it....along the lines of "There's no replacement for displacement".

Yes GM has it already in full production. We build the 5.3L engines in St. Catharines that have the cylinder deactivation system and we used to call it "Displacement on Demand" Also, right now GM has over 23 vehicles that meet or exceed the set limits to be deemed "Fuel Efficient", more than any other manufacturer, I might add.

Wow...you guys said it all. I drove a rental Malibu w/ the AFM. I couldn't tell the difference either. I'd watch the gauge go from 8cyl to 4cyl on the hwy on and off...on and off...

:eek: Yeah...that was a goof up! Sorry bout that...it was a 6 cylinder to 3 cylinder!!! Thanks for pointing that out.
