Exclamation Geek friends, need help with data recovery!

Here's the situation:
  • HP Pavillion dv6000
  • XP Professional
  • Full of viruses, cleaned it off with Avast and Ccleaner, ran buggy afterword
  • Ran a system restore, all music and pictures were gone.
  • Shat brix.

Help! Geek Squad is a couple hundred-a couple thousand and I can't afford it! Is there a good data recovery program out there?

a program called "r-studio" has worked for me...I think there's a free trial so you can see if it will work before you buy.

I did a non destructive restore, so all of my shiz should have been okay. Done it a hundred times on other comps, so no need to back up right? :bangdesk:

I find it hard to believe the pics, music etc. are gone but your PC is ok? Do you remember how much disk space you had? Is it less? As in "All of my music and pics are gone" less?

The Bear is correct; even if you have to re-lowndoad your music, your car is still hot.

It's possible that you are in a new user profile (folder) instead of your original one. What OS are you on? XP? Vista/Win7? in XP, your user profile is stored in c:\Documents and Settings\ then there should be a folder with your username. if Vista\Win7, it's under c:\users\ ... you could try searching the entire hard drive for mp3 files, if you don't see them otherwise. Let us know what you find.

typically system restore is back to original OEM specs
only a backup would have saved any files, but i would believe if you had that many viruses, i would not want those files back on the PC, as they will only spread the infection again.

Also check the size of the root directory C: drive
if there is only a few GB used from the total drive, then that is only the Operating System installed, and you have lost it.

Last resort would be to send off for data recovery, but thats around 1000 dollars

When you say system restore do you mean a windows system restore or a HP restore to factory? If factory restore was done most likely most was lost. File recovery depends on that area of the hard drive where the files were not being written over. There are several file recovery softwares out there, most have an eval (free) which will at least show what may possibly be recovered, understand "may" is the operable word. Good luck on this one!!
