It's been a week since the trade... initial thoughts
Been a week since i traded in the Camaro on a Mustang 5.0, got lots of hatefull comments on that but also lots of positive feedback from people. anyhow I thought some of you might like to hear my initial impressions about the differences in the two models. please leave your childish comments out of this thread. I liked my Camaro and will own another. I am the type of guy that buys a new car every year and if i bought the same car every year i wouldnt know what anything else is like. THIS IS NOT A CAMARO VS MUSTANG THREAD
keep in mind that the mustang is an automatic and my Camaro SS was a 6 speed manual. couple things i have noticed so far. the camaro power is More obvious when driving and is a more "in your face" type of power. the Mustang seems extremely docile and mild and gives no indication of the kind of power lurking. i was beginning to think that maybe the Camaro was way faster and that all the stuff i had read about the mustang was hype. i learned different at the track. the Camaro feels more stable when cornering yet likes to dart around on rougher roads where trucks have made grooves. the mustang is more nimble yet very stable on roads that the Camaro darted around on. Camaro brakes are far better but my mustang does not have the Brembo brakes. the Boston accoustic sound system puts the shaker 500 system to shame. the Mustang limited slip seems tighter than the camaro limited slip, the automatic transmission in the mustang is a bit awkward on the street as it has a hesitation when you step on the pedal before it downshifts. however at the track it performs flawlessly, i dont know how the Camaro Automatic compares but i imagine GM dialed it in a bit better since i dont recall my buddy complaining about the shifting on his auto equipped SS Camaro. overall the Camaro seems to have better features and options. these are my time slips for yesterday on my first and second pass in the mustang. completely bone stock with out so much as an air adjustment in the tires. left in in drive with Traction control on and left off idle at the line. |

Glad to see a nice honest review without bias. I think they're both great cars and if the camaro never came out in 2009 I would be a mustang owner. I really don't know why everyone here hates mustangs and I think it's a little childish but I love my camaro and have no regrets!

Nice write-up, thanks. I too noticed on my Fords, not just My 2001 Mustang, that there is a very noticeable delay in the tranmission downshift (especially if you manually push the auto-tran down a gear). I find it interesting that the Camaro feels chattery on uneven pavement with IRS and the Mustang does not with the solid rear. Took my Camaro out this weekend and burned through a tank of gas...in the "Look at me" dept, Camaro win hands down...everytime.

I think many people "misread" your approach on the last thread, which caused some of the poor comments.
It's nice to see that it didn't drive you away and thanks for the objective write up!

my Camaro was bone stock. i have attached the time slips for the camaro. in all fairness it was july when i ran the camaro and i had trouble launching without wheel hopping or going up in smoke.

I know what you mean about it doesn't feel as fast and as raw as other cars like the SS and my GT500. I drove my buddys 5.0L and I didn't feel the pull that one usually feels when flying through the gears even though we hit triple digits in no time. It doesn't feel domestic in stock form to me, but all of that can change with a few aftermarket parts.

Most 5.0 guys love the automatic even with the 3.15 final gear ratio. You will be very happy when/if you do a final gear ratio swap. The automatic transmission is the 6R80 Ford/Livonia and has a steep 1st gear ratio of 4.17. You will notice a power increase and the transmission will get a crisper beyond 1500 miles as the engine and transmission get broke in.
I hope you enjoy your 5.0, thank god you stayed with an American company. I would love to see pic's and keep me in the loop as you start modding the car. |

very nice, I like hearing from people who had both, it adds alot more. The auto 5.0 is no slouch judging from the numbers. I heard a tune turns them into an animal.

Shit, the 5.0 is 7/10 faster. I think I'll trade in too.

i honestly think that with a set of drag radials and no other changes i could get down to the 12.50 range. it spins that much out of the hole.
