DIY Grit Guard for $2.00
The wife actually came up with this idea, so just in case it doesn't work for you don't get mad at me.
Head over to your local Dollar store and pick up a plastic bucket/pail, and a plastic colander(pasta strainer). As you can see the strainer doesn't fit. Cut it down to size to fit at the bottom of the pail. The cool thing is the strainer can be flipped either way depending how you think it will work best. Kudos to the wifey! |

Good concept. However I don't see it working to well.

1) Keeping the mitt/sponge from touching the bottom of the pail (which this does) 2) Allow particles of dirt to fall ever so softly through the holes and onto the bottom surface of the pail (which this does) Gotta stick up for my wife's idea man. |

You might need to make the openings just a little bigger in case you have a little bit bigger particles, but not to big so that it does not come back through, but it might just work. I applaud your efforts in trying. Let us know how it works.

True, true. If fact I thought exactly the same. In one of the pictures I began to make a few of the slots a little larger for those bigger particles.

When you do that make sure you don't have and edge so that your wash mitt doesn't catch or snag on the cut places, kinda smooth those areas so to speak.

No actually.. it won't work as well as you think. Though, if you wife knew how the Grit Guard worked, she would come up with a better idea =D So props to you and your wife ! =)
http://www.autogeek.net/pinnacle-was...gift-pack.html Grit Guard works by trapping the dirt underneath the grid. You see the cut-away pic? There is a X shaped blockoff that seals to the bottom and sides of the bucket. This basically prevents the water from being irratated, when you put your hands and mitts into the bucket. It keeps the water from Spiraling up, picking up the dirt you left down there. So yes, in a way, your homemade GG works... but just not as well as you think =p. If you could have some sort of blockoff, that prevents further water irratation, then I think you have a winner.

The strainer doesn't actually touch the bottom of the pale, it hovers 3-4 inches above the bottom. I purposely left the strainer wide enough so that it actually holds itself against the sides of the bucket. So when I place the strainer in the bucket, it gets tighter as I push down. The strainer holds itself up.
Therefore there won't be "kick up" of dirt particles. |

I'm not knocking your wife's idea here, it's actually a great idea!
The question I have is, will the colander "rotate" in place when you agitate your wash mit to get the dirt/grime off of it?
