Exclamation Paint Chipping and Water Based Paints

Water based paints are not the problem. Thousands of body shops and dealerships use it wihtout a problem. Road debris and rocks have to get through the clearcoat (clearcoat is still solvent based).

Maybe it's a clearcoat issue. Clearcoat not think enough. Usually repaints don't chip as easily since body shops tend to put a few extra layers of clear on the cars they paint.

The EPA had nothing to do with the thinner paint on vehicles. The manufacturers started putting thinner/fewer coats of paint on cars to save MONEY!!! Save a few bucks on each car and it begins to add up.

iv said it before and ill say it again.. i paint cars.. its not the water base system.. its the lack of clear coat on the camaro and i proved it when i was wet sanding a scratch on my rear quarter with 2000 grit.. i sanded for about 1o seconds and i was down the the base then the primer. it should not take that little to sand past the clear with 2000 grit.

Speaking of which, I 'paid extra' for the yellow too. AND, while washing the car 3 days ago, found 'white dots' in front of the back wheel wells, just beyond edge of doors on BOTH sides, same spot. WTH? Area is about 1 foot square. Really ticks me off....its a new car...never had this issue with even a USED car that I have purchased let alone a new one. Can anything be done about it? Or is it just up to me to get it repainted if I so desire?

My dad is a retired engineer at GM...its definitely not the water based paint...current factory painting tech is leaps and bounds ahead of the old tech of organic based paints...one thing they have discovered about water based paints is that with the right process, you can produce a much more harder/durable finish....

Are you considering adding a few more coats of clear to yours? I'm really considering it. I work for a paint company, and I have the access that I could do it pretty easily. Just deciding if it's worth the effort.... Part of the draw for me would be a much slicker finish... (no peel)
