PA Emission Inspection

Hey Pennsylvanians,

How far can you go with the Exhaust mods and still stay legal for the annual emissions inspection? Some of the Long Tube headers say that they will violate emission standards.

Thanks

Yep..........that and the OBDII reading will let you have 1 Not Ready. I am in NC, but PA is the same, my parents live in Montgomery County. If you need an example of what it looks like........

Do you live in State College or just going to school there? The reason I ask is because I don't think Centre County requires emmission tests (just PA Safety).

We computer tune every car we install headers on and they're almost always long tube headers. Never had a problem with any of them passing the emissions test.

I'm a professor at Penn State and we definitely have emissions inspection in Centre County (since Feb 2004). However, we only have to pass the Gas Cap Test and a Visual Anti-Tampering Check. The latter means that all OEM components (catalytic converter, muffler) have to be on the car, even if they have been replaced with after market system.

In most other parts of PA, the OBD I/M and Gas Cap Test is required. Not sure why Northern Counties are Exempt from the OBD I/M.

Now, I just need to figure out which exhaust system I want. I like the American Racing Headers full system: 1 7/8 headers, High Flow Cats, X Pipe, and Mufflers.

PA emissions exemptions are based on your zip code, not county.

Not so. I live in Hanover, zip code 17331. Part of Hanover is in York County, the other part is Adams county. York County requires emissions testing while Adams County does not. All the same zip code, just two different counties.

I live in one of the "other counties" in PA and wondering what the "anti-tampering check" exactly means. Is it just to make sure all factory sensors, example O2 sensor, are in place and that all components in the exhaust exists but can be replaced with aftermarket parts.

basically. It's to check that you do indeed have cats and that your O2 sensors are installed.

If you drive your vehicle less than 5,000 miles a year you can get an emissions inspection exemption sticker in PA.
