Nitto 555rs and a M6?
So I keep going back and forth on doing a cam or tires! Now with my last trip to the track and running that 1.91 60ft and 12.60... it makes me wonder how much faster I can get with just tires! I figure 12.4s consistant would be pretty awesome and that should be easy with a tire swap. So I was thinking about 305/35/20s 555r's on my stock rims for next summer, the thing that worries me is this tire not doing what is advertised! Does anyone run these 20s and how do they hook?
I know the Mickys are comming but I am not sure about those, I need to run the tires all summer, around 3k miles and I want them to last a few summers. I know the nittos will last around 10k easy driving and not doing big burnouts. Hell I made my old BFG drags go 15k before they were totaly shot.

Yep, I know how ya feel. I'm going back-n-forth too, but I know deep down in my thick skull....the right thing to do is get the NT555R's if I plan on street-driving them (which I do). I've got to convince myself that the rest of them (M/T's, NT05R's, and M&H Racemasters) need to be for track-only cars. I know there are a few guys on here that street-drive their NT05R's, but like you, I do not want to have to buy a new set of tires every summer!!! Come on...we both know what we "should" do....

Do the Cam, then save money for tires. Those tires won't last long and you will need more.
Those Nittos may do OK on the street when they are new, but once you hit that burnout box a few times you will be hurtin in the rain. Best bet is to get a cheap set of wheels for your drag tires so that you dont need to run them every day. |

I'm running the 555s on the factory 20s, no issues at all. My only pass at the track near stock was a few months back, dumped the clutch at 3500 and had terrible hop. So it's tough to tell how they hook, I probably should have eased the car out a bit more. It does seem as the miles add up on these tires the better the hook.
Since then added a Ed Curtis cam and a set of Phadt lower arms and the car flat out hooks on the street, that may be differant at the track, hopefully I will find out soon. PM me if you want more details

I know thats the best thing but I dont want to drop 1200 bucks just for 2 rims and tires :( It kills me to get beat by slowers cars because they have tires... I feel all the cam will do is make things worse! I lost to a 4th gen this week beacuse he had tires I started pulling him on the top end but he pulled me off the start to hard ...there was no comming back! I figure the cam money could get me tires and a tune, then I will be running some good times and staying consistant. The guy with the 4th gen was rubbing it in my face... that was really pissing me off, I would have beat him easy with some shoes!
Not to worried about the rain, my bfg drags were pretty good in the rain for a good amount of time. I ran the shit out of those things for 2 years, the nittos should last longer. I just want to make sure they are worth the money before I decide.

I ended up picking up a set of ET streets on ZO6 rims....I was skeptical how well the 20"DRs would work....no sidewall etc.

I only run the 555r's on stock wheels ALL the time, I get 10k-11k miles out of them with about 40 passes at the track (including good burnouts), so they work well, I run high 10's and planning on running even lower shortly (hopefully).....my thing is, I want to just drive to the track, race and drive back, I also like my car looking and feeling as stock as possible, but that is just how I feel.....there are many others doing other things that work well too, so it all depends on your preferences....

I run the nto5r on the street and track. Have around 25 passes and 3-4k miles on them. They should last the rest of the summer/fall. Should get 10 passes and another 1k miles on them. After that they will be slicks...lol

Everyone else is in the same boat as you. Just take a look at this thread.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169711 And there are plenty of similar threads. We all want to go fast at the track then drive home and get a lot of mileage out of the tires. Unfortunately, you can't exactly have both so a good compromise are the NT555R's. They will last 10K miles and many have gone 10's in them. The NT05R's are better but they don't last!

I bought my setup from a guy on here in the classifieds but I could almost duplicate it buying new. I was going to get the wheels from a guy on the corvette forum...forget his name but he deals in Corvette wheels. If you check the classifieds there then I am sure you can find him.
He has dozens of takeoffs or blems that are cheap. |

Running new 305/35/20 555 DR's on 10" wide rims, with low 1.60 sixty foots with 433 gear. As any tire gets older and the more it heat cycles (including highway driving, especially in summer) the harder it will get and the less it will bite.
