Carbon Fiber hood

One of the concerns I have regarding the carbon fiber hood is that the
one I saw in person had the vents warping. It appears that the vents are rather thin and I'm worried that the summer heat could facilitate this further. On such a fine looking car one would hope this will be taken
care of before final production starts. Because of these fears, I will most
likley opt for the carbon fiber exposed hood, with the hopes that the sealing agent will provide an extra amount of rigidness to the vents. Thus
helping to prevent this from happening during the life of my ZL1.

Any feed back from the powers to be would be helpfull concerning
this issue would be most appreciated.

Im pretty sure GM is gonna use the same Clear they put on the CF roof of the ZR1 to keep it from discoloration and stay protected.

Yes I agree but the ones which come out with the clear coat should not be a problem. But from what we know so far that's an option, and if you go with out that option they are just placing a strip over the carbon fiber to protect it from the elements. It looks very thin and subject to possible warping at least in the vent area.

Isn't CF itself supposed to be extremely rigid no matter what it's use?

One would think but look at some of the photo's of the red ZL1 when the hood is up and look at the vents carefully. Some are warped out of shape and not evenly spaced out as one would expect. It's been bugging ever since I saw this in person.

Those are not production cars. You can't really judge by them. Lots of changes happen from beginning to finished product. Hell at first there was no auto and now there will be a convertible. I'm sure there'll be a few more tweaks before release.

I think you probably saw a prototype (Ive seen pics with bent vents) which we guesstimated to be plastic. Option or not I think the hood seen on the vert will be the production version. I'm hoping it is all one piece - including the vents. There shouldn't be an issue.

Yes they looked like plastic to me as well, and yes I'm hoping that its because it's an early rendition and all. Just hoping to have some more
feed back from the peeps who would would know for sure and ease my mind some. Just in case I can't afford the exposed CF.

I wasn't there, but I know the warping you were talking about. I'm surprised those weren't caught... Maybe there wasn't a choice...

I'm positive those aren't going to be an issue. I'm not entirely sure that warping had anything to do with the extractor insert itself, more than the plastic it looked like the vents were made of. I'm sure everything is going to be validated and that we're not going to be seeing much of that stuff when ZL1 is finally on the streets.

I'm really loving the idea of the exposed CF insert though. I would probably usually say that looked ricey, but I have to be a little bit of a hypocrite, lol. I'm not sure which way I'd go if it was an option. I like the idea of the CF-look, but really like the extra dimension the stripe adds, so I'd probaby opt' for a painted extractor.

I wonder if those vents are screwed in or snapped in... I would think they'd be screwed in so they'd be more secure at track speeds. If so, perhaps the extra torque distorted the mouting flange or something. OR... I'm just making crap up

Yeah I'm betting that the vents I saw were in fact made of plastic, at least they looked like plastic to me.

Radz, I think the last 5 words of your post are the most accurate!

FYI I have seen ZR1 roofs and b-pillars change color over time to some a yellowish look

That's my concern. The clearcoat is like, what - $60K a quart or something, but if it fades, the CF weakens (that's my understanding - I guess the UV light attacks the fibers or somethign). That's not too big a deal for the extractor, as the load on it isn't probably too significant (compared to a spoiler or splitter or something), but that discoloration would get on my nerves. However, if a person takes the time to keep wax on that clearcoat, I'm sure it would fare better in the sun. Then again - who knows?
