Are canned tunes safe?

If the ZL1 is priced outta my reach, I'll be looking to supercharge my SS. A couple of the SC companies provide a "canned" tune on a handheld programmer and I'm wondering if they are any good/safe. I assume the manufacturer intends it to only be used if there are no other mods, and I'm ok with that.
Obviously a dyne tune would be optimal, but are the canned tunes safe?

yes the "canned" supercharger tune is safe, but you are not getting the most out of your blower. You would need a dyno tune to get the most out of it while still being safe.

Honestly it depends on what company you go with. Some canned tunes are safe, others are not so safe imo.

I would say - Maybe.

I've seen good and bad canned tunes with supercharger systems. Always best to have it checked out.

I would not recommend taking the whipple canned tune into higher RPM's. On the dyno I was pinging with 100 octance. I got a Custom tune that had less timing in it than whipples canned tune and I made 40 more HP.

like others have said - it kinda depends on the company. just remember, companies make these tunes for cars with no other power mods, so if you have an intake or headers, it's going to be seriously lacking. they also write them conservatively so as to have the least number of warranty issues.

If you're going to spend thousands of dollars on a supercharger kit, do it right the first time and get a dyno tune from a pro for another few hundred bucks.

If the issue is that you don't have a shop near you that you want to use or just want to wrench on it yourself...I would buy from Janetty. He sells a lot of different brands of SC that come with tunes and he can make sure the tune is 'right'.

I bought the E-force from Janetty Racing and did my own install. That superchager kit comes with the SCT hand held already loaded with the Edelbrock canned tune. I ran that canned tune for a few days and it was definately too "safe". I was not at all happy with the way it ran. Janetty then provided me with a safe custom tune via email (no extra cost) and I liked that much better. Once we recorded a few log files on my laptop using the supplied SCT device, Ted made some little tweaks to the custom tune. MUCH happier with the custom tune and it did not cost any extra.

Hope this helps,

-Mark.

That's the same way my Vortech went down with Ted...we did the install, loaded Vortech's tune via the SCT (which wasn't that bad really), then datalogged and worked with Ted for a much stronger tune.

Thanks for the Props Guys, The Supercharger Canned tunes are Safe almost to the point of being Lame.
