ADM Scoop Concept

so i was thinking about the ADM scoop the other day and thought: what if one just cut out the plastic area (where you would if installing ADM, below), and then do nothing more? basically if you just allow cooler air to come into that area of the car, then the filter would surely be getting colder air? i know the race scoop directs the air towards the filter, but that doesn't mean just having that hole would not provide some benefit without directing the air right at the filter. what do you think? maybe even put a screen or something about the hole to prevent (as much) water from coming through. thoughts?

I mean yes, but what the scoop really does is direct the air into the airbox.

The biggest issue is getting rid of the waser bottle. You can cut the larger hole but the washer bottle is going to block all of that air coming in.

Caverman is right. The washer bottle is blocking most all of the air and the scoop stops and kind of directs the air up towards the filter.

Why not just purchase the scoop ? a whole lot less torturing and cutting on your car also.

I drove mine with the scoop on the other day in a good old fashioned Florida DELUGE! I mean the animals were starting to gather in pairs. Worried as *&*^%$%^ I poped my hood as soon as I got home and the filter was bone dry. Lots of water elsewhere in the engine bay and plenty of condensation on the window of my CAI, but the filter was good to go.

As long as you don't submerge the filter it should be fine. That mesh will stop a lot of water.

if you look from the bumper of the car at the hole you are supposed to dremel out, you can see there is a little gap where wind/air can get through and around the water bottle. i still think if you cut or even drill holes around the water bottle, you could get substantially cooler air in that area.

i mean the scoop only dyno'd another 5hp on top of a cold air intake, and who knows how much that was the scoop and how much was just the difference in 2 dyno results...so even 1 or 2 more hp from cutting/drilling holes makes me less interested in the ~$200 scoop/relo purchase.

I still have the hole cut from when I had the scoop and a behind the headlight cai. Sure every little bit helps, but like the others I feel the bottle is a major problem. No way would I run another one of those cais without, at minimum, the bottle removed.

Yeah, that bottle is huge and I'm sure it's blocking airflow. Look at how much space there is in there without it!

well there are two things going on that the scoop achieves:

1. bring in cool air to the CAI "cabin" (area)
2. direct airflow towards the filter

i don't know which one of those two is more beneficial in terms of horsepower, but results do show a 5hp gain on the dyno. if you assume both 1 and 2 are 2.5 horsepower each, i figure the location of the bottle doesn't really matter if you create more openings for the outside air to go into the CAI cabin area. whether that be around the bottle or through the bottle...either way you could theoretically get 2.5 more horsepower from doing so.

again this is all speculation. i don't want to knock any sponsor's scoop, but if we're considering 5hp for upwards of $200 after you buy the relo kit, if i can achieve half of that for free...seems like an easy choice.

Yeah, it's worth a shot. I don't think it would hurt anything. Just takes a bit of time to Dremel that piece of plastic out of there.

Instead of a Dremel, I used tin snips to cut the plastic. The cuts came out real clean and I felt it definitely was a much better way to cut the hole needed for the scoop.
