OK so I've seen several camaros with a small air filter where the oil fill cap goes. Why is this? Is it some sort of trend I'm not in the loops with?

What your seeing is the Rx breather. It replaces booth the oil cap and the air line that goes to your intake to prevent oil from getting into your intake tube. Check out the Rx catch can thread to find some more info.
