Adding e85
Unlike Illinois or Michigan, Iowa does not have 93. The car kept being a little sluggish on 91, so I've been adding a gallon to a gallon and a half of e85 with every fill up (10 - 16 gallons), basically a conservative ten to one ratio.... for a total 17% ethanol by volume. Seems like car has smoother and quicker acceleration as well as same highway mileage. haven't got any check engine codes yet.
Wanted to verify that computer compensates and adds a little more fuel. was also wondering about running e85 and best way to tune between it and premium for trips back to Detroit. Last edited by redredrage; 06-18-2012 at 10:42 PM. |

Dont forget that pump gas could have up to 10 percent of ethanol also. So that is alot of ethanol. The big isssue with too much ethanol is that it likes to dry out the rubber seals and fuel lines.

50/50 E85 and 91 (E47) will raise your octane considerably, raise the LTFT's ~15% and since it adds the fueling to the LTFT it also adds it WOT.
You have enough fuel pump & injector to run this if you wish. The stock tune is plenty rich enough in PE from what I've seen once the LTFT's ramp up. Coming from the Turbo Cobalt SS LNF world & HPTuners, I can say it rocks. Of course tuning for it would bring the LTFT's in line but the little bit you are adding isn't worth the tune. My '02 LS1 has been on the corn for a few years. No issues. Here's an online ethanol calculator you can play with... http://intercepteft.com/calc.html Full E85 requires 30% more fuel and the stock fueling isn't up to that.

I've ran 35% so far with fuel trims around +10 LTFT's and zero issues. Seeing Injector Duty Cycle of ~75% so there is plenty of fueling for a 1:1 mix afaik. I haven't personally tried it yet, next tank I think.

Okay, so no modification of car software, simply fill to 35 to 50% e85

Yep, drive it easy until the Long Term Fuel Trims adjust. Then Romp.
Stock tune on 35% E & 93 I still see a degree or 3 of knock retard around 4-5k rpm. It was hot & humid that day though. I log with HPTuners Scanner BTW

Looked at that scanner , looks good. I have an Android tablet, are there any scanners that would work with that?

I don't know, you would have to find an OBD adapter for the connection. I seem to remember reading a post or 3 somewhere on it.
I have the full HPT tuning suite, been tuning for years.

Other than fuel trims in closed loop which if they reach more than 13 % will most likely set a lean code. Then you will be Lean at WOT as well. Ted.

I went ahead and bought an Elm 327 blue tooth odb 2 scanner online for $17 shipped.
Since I have an Android smart phone and tablet both with blue tooth I'm good. I'll see what 02 sensors saying as well as the injector duty cycle and air to fuel ratios I think GM should have to make gas hogging vehicles not only flex fuel capable, but setup for better performance with it to encourage the sale of energy independent fuel. |

Figured id try what the gentleman above said about adding more ethanol . Added 2 galons of e85 to 10 galons 89 octane fuel for a 28% mix of ethanol, since it's cheaper than regular, here in iowa.
Lots of power, no hesitation. Using straight regular or 89 or 91 can result in hesitation . Would be interested in seeing a dyno to get exact power differences down. Feels just as strong if not better. No codes, noticed a drop in fuel economy..... about 2-3mpg@ 65 maybe 1-2mpg city |

FYI CEL won't set for fuel trims unless you get to +/- 20%. It would take 60%E to get the stock tune trims to +20 fwiw.
Yes, mileage will suffer with increasing the E as it requires more fuel to get to stoich. That's why the fuel trims go positive in closed loop. Run 30% E with 91 and your engine will like it. Fuel trims will settle around +10.
