What are these and what purpose do they serve? Can they be removed with out problems?

Those look like some sort of exhaust cutout valves. The springs would keep them open. The only way I would consider removal is if you can get all of the parts removed: valve, shaft, lever, and spring. Then you would have to weld the holes. Seems like a lot of work.

Heat activated flaps in pipes, they restrict air flow and cause the motor and exhaust system to heat up faster, (in the old days) ha ha...... they had them just after the exhaust manifold

I think they were called heat risers.

They are only on the convertibles. I've heard these are spring valves to help lessen drone in the passenger area. Not sure if true or not but I kept them on when I did my exhaust.

I did a little adjusting on them where they are always open and the car sounds better. Drove it down the road and no check engine light so I am going to leave it that way for a while. I am hoping to find more info at the Camaro5fest at Indy in Aug.

Are they controlled by exhaust temperature?
