Applying touch up paint

Can anyone help me through this process? Are there other things needed to make it look it's best? Primer, clear coat, where can I get these items?

Clean the chip with alcohol, dry it off and get ready. Barely touch the brush to the chip and let it be. Practice on a different surface and do not have too much paint on the brush. Do not let the touch up paint touch the undamaged paint, but let the paint flow to the edges. The key is to be patient and do 6-8 coats to build it up, letting it flash between coats.

You can also use a toothpick or the torn end of a book match to apply the touch up paint.

No clear coat pen? What do you mean let it flash?

Flash is a painters term for "let it dry." Generally flash times are pretty short for auto paints (7-10 minutes). Just read the label on your paint.

Flash in terms with paint's or polishes is like nsane has mention, dry's very fast and very little time to work with.

And go with what Paul SS has mention using a toothpick or the torn end of a book match to apply the touch up paint. That's old school and always work for me and everyone around. Remember to practice before doing it on your paint.

You can also try a magnifying glass to get a bigger picture of where you are placing the paint and make sure you have plenty of light. Rest your hand on the car and roll your wrist and move your fingers to guide the paint.

Great suggestions. I know that when I do it I use a toothpick and you almost have to remember it's as if you're "filling" in the chip and not actually painting it if that makes sense.

And don't sweat doing a bad job, it can't look worse than the chip... right?

The paint and methods ya'll are talking about...is that for the touch up paint from the dealer?

I am thinking of getting some paint, but wasn't sure if that was the best place.

Get GM touch up paint from the dealer or Dupli-Color from an auto parts store.

Well so far so good. Still have a good 4-5 more coats to go and then clear coat pen. Where would I purchase one?
