it looks as though the traffic in front of the semi was stopped, and maybe the truck driver wasn't paying attention, knew he was going to slam into the traffic, so he tried to cut across the road, and BAM.
couldn't have been brake failure, because he was able to stop...across the road. Had his brakes failed, he would have kept on rolling after the impact.

The trailers of the two trucks could have latched together and prevented them both from going anywhere else. Either way, that Russian is a lucky guy.

I know that this was taped on 9-19-12...I am willing to bet the driver still has the shakes and has been speed shooting vodka ever since! Wowza!

I think you're right, or they just barely worked.
I'm thinking he was slowing down as best he could, and was going to try to pass on the shoulder. At the last minute he decided it was too close and swerved left. That's going to be a great story for him to tell his grandkids some day

Tractor trailer guy cut across to avoid coming to a complete stop, luckiest guy in the world had the right of way and didn't think the guy would make that turn, the reason the truck stopped after the impact was that 1 the momentum was slowed on impact and I believe his emergency brake popped
