How much weight in the trunk? Winter driving

Alright so I have 18" K-sport rims on Blizzak WS 70 tires and 6 Sandbags (40lbs each) in the trunk for added traction. I had to add sand bags because just with the tires I found myself sliding everywhere and not being able to go.

I had 5 bags but added 1 more 40 pounder and it didn't seem to help at all actually felt worse. I read somewhere when driving these cars to add 240 pounds of weight in the back but is that overkill for a V6?

How much weight do you V6 drivers add when winter driving? I live in Canada so we have the worst winters... Please no "shoulda gotta V8 or buy a truck", just simple advice would be greatly appreciated."

So nobody puts a certain amount of weight in the trunk while winter driving? Do you all just put a set of winter tires and pray you don't slide?

I got mine in April so I have yet to drive in the winter. I have 4-5 sand bags that I used with my RWD TBSS so I'll be monitoring the situation. I have 20" Pirelli snow tires.

I don't add any weight and get around just fine. I think these are great in the snow, not sure why you are having trouble?

Traction Control means no bags of sand in the trunk...that will just mess up the sensors.

This will be our 4th winter.

You realize how bad winters are in Alberta?

I am going to try with and without sandbags, without seems like the car cant get any traction with out extra weight and yes I am using Blizzak WS 70 winter tires, it handles better than most FWD vehicles but I had a few scary moments.

My 97 LT1, 00 WS6, and 05 GTO all had 3 75lb sand bags in the hatch/trunk. Without them the car would slide around in deeper snow even with the T/C on.

The Coquihalla gets more snow fall in winter than Rodgers Pass.

Our's is a daily driver. We replaced a FWD with the CAMARO and it out performs it without question.

I am pretty sure Minnesota gets more snow then both of you combined, I mean last year we got pounded with a seasonal high of about 15''. Pathetic to say the least.

Had this thread in the back of my mind, so just to experiment I threw in one of my 70 lb bags of sand into the trunk before my commute. I'm still running 275 Pirelli summer tires up front and 275 Nitto 555's on back. I've seen temps as low as 31 degrees.

Car felt more planted, had less of that floaty feeling.

Only reason I have not thrown on my snow tires is that I'm hoping to do one more big mod this year, and then hit a track, run a number, and then put on the snows.

Wrong

The Coq has a annual snowfall of over 50 feet.

Keep in mind that summer tire compounds become rock hard and provide greatly reduced traction in cold temps. Might want to consider cheap winter tires...

I usually end up putting in about 200lbs.. but that depends on how heavy the dead hookers and blow is.
